At the end of June, OCR will release the sources for next year’s G154 Special Study exams. The focus for the 2013 exams will be the general defences of insanity and automatism.

St John’s student Elliott Herrod-Taylor has presented the Rugby shirt he wore while playing in the England Under-17 squad to St John’s. The shirt will be displayed in the school and sixteen-year-old Elliott hopes it will inspire students at the school to work hard to achieve their own personal goals.

Elliott has been playing Rugby since the age of six, and had already played at County level for Berkshire and for Dorset and Wilts, and trains every Monday with Bath Rugby. Earlier this year Elliott’s dream of being selected for the England squad came true, and he has since played against Scotland, Canada and Wales. He has recently been focusing on his GCSE examinations at St John’s, and is hoping that his results will enable him to take up the offer of a sports scholarship at Marlborough College where he will study for his A-levels.

Elliott thoroughly enjoyed the experience of training with other top Rugby players during a week’s training camp at Wellington College earlier this year. “The atmosphere was fantastic” explained Elliott. “We were living, training and eating together, and we were treated like professional players. We had presentations for our shirts before each match, where we wore our England ties and dress shirts, and had sports massages and ice baths pre and post the matches.
I was really nervous before each match, but as you come through the tunnel, you forget about your nerves and start to focus on the match. We won against Scotland and Canada, and we were winning against Wales, before I was taken off through injury. Wales went on to win.
It felt really special and great to represent my country and I want to try hard to be there again at U18 level. It was very inspirational, and I made some good friends from all over the country”.

The shirt, now beautifully framed, was presented by Elliott, his parents and his younger brother to St John’s Headteacher Dr Patrick Hazlewood, who congratulated Elliott on his achievement and wished him every success. “This is a wonderful achievement” said Dr Hazlewood. “I feel sure that Elliott has the determination that is needed to succeed in this highly-competitive area, and I am proud that we at St John’s have been able to help him towards achieving his goals”.

Longer term, Elliott plans to go to University after completing his A-Levels. He hopes to continue to play with Bath Rugby, and is aiming for an Academy Contract, which will pay his university costs, while allowing him to compete at Under-18 and Under-20 level and then to play for Bath’s premiership team.

Left to their own devices during playtimes and lunchtimes, some children will play in a very positive way. They will work together, mutually acknowledging the rules of their own games, helping and supporting each other and gaining much from the experience.

Unfortunately not all children do this. Some become isolated, some race around letting off steam and occasionally colliding with innocent by-standers, some become the victims of bullies, others become bullies.

A straightforward way to enhance positive play in the school grounds is to teach the children one game a week which they can then work on together. Some games will catch on and become continuing favourites. Others by the nature of things will fade after a few days.

But two great benefits will emerge from teaching children one game a week. Firstly the initial playing of the playground game by a group of children is always a highly rewarding experience. The sorting out of the rules, agreeing the fundamentals and, above all, working together are all fundamental to the development of the social aspect of each child’s life.

Secondly, although the suggested games will not motivate and engage all children, they will enthuse many, leaving teachers on duty a much smaller number of potentially problematic situations to deal with.

As a further benefit, extracts from the book can be given to parents so that they can encourage their children to play these games when friends come around at weekends or after school, or to give a greater structure to birthday parties.

PSHE in the Playground is a photocopiable book (also available on CD so that it can be loaded onto the school’s network) which incorporates enough games to last a full school year and includes games that are suitable for both key stage 1 and key stage 2 children. The Sixth Form College, Solihull was celebrating today as Justin King, Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s and one of its former students, was awarded a prestigious Association of Colleges (AoC) Gold Award by Lord Willis of Knaresborough at the House of Commons.

Staff and students from the Sixth Form College, Solihull were present at the awards ceremony which is held each year to recognise further education alumni as well as acknowledge the vital role that colleges play in the careers of the winners and of their continuing achievements.

Justin King was nominated by the College where he studied his A Levels in 1979. Armed with his grades from the College, Justin undertook a degree in Business Administration at the University of Bath. After graduating in 1983, he worked for a number of prominent food manufacturers such as Mars Confectionery, Pepsi International and Haägen Dazs before becoming Director of ASDA in 1994. In 2001, King moved to Marks & Spencer where he managed the food division.

Justin joined Sainsbury’s in 2004, charged with improving sales and halting its declining market share . Within six months, King had launched his recovery programme under the banner, “Making Sainsbury’s Great Again” and has recently been able to announce that the company has achieved 30 consecutive quarters of sales growth.

In January 2009 Justin was appointed to the Board of the London Organising Committee for the Olympics by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London. He was then made a member of the Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Group and awarded a CBE in the Birthday Honours in 2011.

On receiving his award, Justin said, “I am very honoured to be presented with this award. My time at Solihull Sixth Form College was key to my decision to go to University and study business, and as such, pivotal in my career. I am delighted to say that more recently my daughter has successfully attended the college too.”

Justin King was among eight former students whose careers have been positively influenced by their former Colleges. The other winners are Trevor Baylis – Inventor and Entrepreneur, Idris Elba – Actor, Katy Etherington – Graphic Designer and Founder of PA Pool, Peter France – Chief Executive of Rotork plc, Justine Greening MP – Secretary of State for Transport, Amir Khan – Professional Boxer, and Sir Kevin Smith – Chief Executive of GKN plc.

To highlight the important role further education continues to play for today’s students the AoC Charitable Trust runs a ‘mini me’ campaign alongside the Gold Awards. The nominating colleges each select a current student who shows promise in a similar field to their Gold Award winner.

Toby Railton, from Solihull, is currently studying A Levels in Economics, Politics, Mathematics and Further Maths. He has secured a prestigious 6-year apprenticeship with accountancy firm KPMG, which will see him complete a 4-year Accountancy degree at the University of Birmingham and start work at the firm.

Toby, 18, had the opportunity to meet his muse at the award ceremony at the House of Commons on 13 June and find out what it takes to carve out a successful career and about the role that their college played in their success.

Toby commented, “It’s great to hear about Justin King’s success and good to know that he started where I am now. It shows what you can achieve if you are willing to work hard. I hope my apprenticeship at KPMG is the start of a successful career for me in business.”

It is often the case that literacy games (as in “change one letter at a time to make ‘hat’ into ‘cap’ in two moves”) enhances an interest in and an understanding of the language.

When we go further and link such games to the world of work, we broaden the horizons of the children not only in terms of literacy, but also in terms of the wider world.

Most children find questions such as “change ‘this is the way to the park’ into a question” interesting in themselves. But when correct answers take the children forward in a board game based on careers, the enthusiasm, and the level of learning, is enhanced.

Traditionally tests for dyslexia have been conducted by educational psychologists at a one-to-one meeting, and there’s no doubt that such an approach can give a detailed and insightful view of a young person’s issues with the written language.

However the approach can be expensive and of itself doesn’t always provide an immediate indication of what one should do next to help the individual in question.

With this problem in mind, the Dyslexia Centre has produced an on-line test which can be taken by pupils and students from the age of 8 upwards and which gives a clear idea if the individual might be dyslexic, and if so, what specific help and support should be given to the individual.

If you enter a pupil or student for the test you will receive a detailed written report on the individual’s understanding of the written language and a set of resources that can be used immediately with the individual.

For one keen student at The Sixth Form College, Solihull, his drive and initiative have paid off, as he has just landed a job at this summer’s London 2012 Olympic Games.

Mohammed Ali (aged 18, from Sparkhill) will be a Last Mile Team Member at the Olympics, which will involve paid work for the entire duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. As the title ‘Last Mile’ implies, Mohammed will be one of many Olympic employees to be stationed within a mile of Olympic venues to help the many thousands of spectators find their way to the events they have tickets for.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” enthused Mohammed. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I wanted to be there and when I looked on the Olympics website I saw their ‘Get involved’ section and decided to go for it.”

Mohammed applied online and was quickly contacted for a telephone interview. After suitably impressing organisers over the phone, he was invited down to Canary Wharf in London for a face-to-face interview. He was grouped with 5 other people and asked to discuss issues and situations that might arise at the Olympics, so organisers could see how he would handle any problems we might be faced with. He obviously did well, because a week later he was offered the job!

Training has been provided; Mohammed spent three days at Wembley Stadium recently, completing a variety of classroom activities and practical role-playing scenarios.

“It was great,” added Mohammed. “It was brilliant to just be in Wembley Stadium and now that I’ve done the training I’m really looking forward for the event to start. I will be based around the North Greenwich Arena, which is what most people know as the O2 Arena – it has been re-named for the Olympics.”

Mohammed is currently studying the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business Course, which is entirely assessed by coursework; thus his involvement in the Olympic Games does not interfere with examinations.

Some people who write columns in newspapers appear, on occasion, to take the point of view that beautiful handwriting is less important than mastery of the keyboard.

Education officials in some states in the USA have announced that skills crucial to 21st century success include keyboard skills but not handwriting. In Indiana for example, pupils from the age of eight sit standardised tests online. Proficient typing will help them to pass exams; handwriting has nothing to do with the matter.

Meanwhile one of the English exam boards has just conducted a test in which the students read the exam questions on tablets such as the iPad, but then have to answer the questions using pen and paper.

So where does the balance lie?

Interestingly, research undertaken by Dr Karen James from Indiana University has shown that ‘children who had been taught to write developed brain patterns similar to those found in reading adults. That doesn’t happen with keyboarding…’.

Indeed, many teachers observe that there is a link between cursive script and effective spelling. To generate cursive handwriting, the pen arm and torso work together, creating a sense of space and direction connected with a particular word. By contrast, tapping on a keyboard often involves only a gentle up-and-down movement of the fingers.

Handwriting is also an expression of personality. It is idiosyncratic, it is human, it is the hallmark of an individual. However, if you don’t put your name on a piece of typed work, the chances of identifying who it belongs to are reduced. Only if the writer’s style of writing is highly individual will the source of the writing be recognised.

To help develop a good clear style, ‘Handwriting Made Simple’ is a fully cursive handwriting programme in which all letters join. It contains twenty-nine sessions for Upper Key Stage 1 and the same for Lower Key Stage 2.

Young people with Autism Spectrum Condition face difficulties with social skills, communication and behaviour – all things that if left can make it very difficult for children to maximise their potential in terms of their education.

My aunt was a teacher in the middle of the last century. A lovely, kind and giving lady she was very much of the old school, and she would on occasion rail against the way spellings were modified in advertisements and popular culture.

Cereals such as Weetabix came in for comment, as did the re-writing of magic as “magick”.

But it was popular music that really heated up the discussion. Why were the Beatles not the Beetles? What was the “Led” in Led Zepplin supposed to mean? And as for “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” – well it was just beyond the pale.

Today, if she were still with us, I fear she would have serious words to say about Creme Eggs, Blu-ray and Froot Loops.

Indeed so strong were her opinions that I rather imagine that the Kumfi range of industrial matting, should she ever have come across it, would have caused her to sit down and take a few deep breaths.

But then she was a teacher, not a person with a legal responsibility to ensure that workers and visitors to factories and warehouses who stand in one area of the floor a lot do not wear the flooring out.

But when you do have such a responsibility, it is of course important to get the right matting in the right place. One in three local authority centres are currently threatened, and this could deny millions of children access to potentially life-changing experiences. In many cases these closures could be avoided.

There is one way in which virtually every school in the UK could save itself a considerable sum of money each year.

Negotiation is something most of us think we are good at because we do it every day. We negotiate with colleagues, we negotiate with students. If we have a family at home we also spend time negotiating with them. (After all which parent has not at some time resorted to, “You can watch TV after you have done your homework”?)

But there is no doubt that most of us working in schools don’t have much background in negotiation with suppliers. We tend to accept the contract that suppliers offer us, sign it, and expect everything to be fine.

If we do negotiate it is usually to try to get a discount without necessarily noticing that in so doing we might actually be negatively affecting other aspects of the purchase.

And yet the contract between the school and the retailer offers an opportunity for each side to be specific about what is possible, to clarify assumptions and to enter into a relationship which is satisfactory and beneficial for both parties.

It is because many schools pay little attention to the contracts that they sign that the book Contract Matters:

Some parents know from the moment their child is born which school they want the child to go to. But of course for many others the choice of school is a matter of considerable concern and debate.

Parents make their final decision in many ways – taking into account the views of other parents, the school’s broader reputation, the impression gained on a visit to the school, the ease of getting to the school, and through a review of the school prospectus.

When it comes to the school’s prospectus, increasingly parents are anticipating that they will be able to see this information online. Where one school offers an interactive prospectus online and another does not, then the parents will tend to move towards the school with the interactive prospectus, not just because it tends to give increased information, but also because it reflects (in the parents’ eyes) a school more in touch with the modern world.

Such “interactive prospectuses” can include video content, dynamic image galleries, and interactive forms. Although there is a cost in setting up such a prospectus, it can also have a saving for schools for you will then be able to offer a smaller version of the printed prospectus – and indeed many parents will be satisfied with the online version and not seek a printed version at all.

What’s more small details in an online prospectus can be changed as needed, without any change being required to the full prospectus. And the school can promote itself more readily as being environmentally conscious.

Some topics grab some students, others don’t.

It is a fact of life that although some young people care very much about the environment, for others it is not of central concern.

What’s more, for many of those who do care about environmental matters, their concerns focus on saving rainforests and protecting whales. The question of the development and recycling of metals doesn’t automatically fit into their personal agenda.

And yet it should. Without metals our civilisation would not exist. Cars, ipods, houses, mobile phones… all require metals, and all raise recycling issues.

In fact it is hard to find many a non-food product that does not contain metal. Tables, beds, noticeboards… everything contains some metal. Which is why it is so vital that students know about how metals are used and recycled.

It is with this in mind that the British Metals Recycling Association has produced the free educational project: “Metals and Me”.

Our AQA A-Level Sociology gender and education presentation includes 30 PowerPoint slides which focus on the topic of gender and education and the changes that have occurred.

The presentation explores external societal reasons as to the changes examined, as well as internal factors within schools. It begins with a look at the current situation in education and examines the difference between boys and girls and their educational success.

It then goes on to examine the history of gender and educational achievement. It also considers numerous sociological reasons as to why girls underachieved in the past. These include patriarchal curriculum, the influence of the hidden curriculum, the dominance of boys within the classroom, teacher expectations, cultural values, socialisation and parental expectations, as well as material deprivation, biological differences and peer pressure.

There is one way in which virtually every school in the UK could save itself a considerable sum of money each year.

Negotiation is something most of us think we are good at because we do it every day. We negotiate with colleagues, we negotiate with students. If we have a family at home we also spend time negotiating with them. (After all which parent has not at some time resorted to, “You can watch TV after you have done your homework”?)

But there is no doubt that most of us working in schools don’t have much background in negotiation with suppliers. We tend to accept the contract that suppliers offer us, sign it, and expect everything to be fine.

If we do negotiate it is usually to try to get a discount without necessarily noticing that in so doing we might actually be negatively affecting other aspects of the purchase.

And yet the contract between the school and the retailer offers an opportunity for each side to be specific about what is possible, to clarify assumptions and to enter into a relationship which is satisfactory and beneficial for both parties.

It is often found that pupils first develop a love for science and the notion of a science career during their primary years as it is a fun subject which involves lots of engaging practical learning. This in turn generates an extra enthusiasm for learning.

Following the scrapping of KS2 science SATS, the hope was that science in primary schools would become fun again.

We have however discovered that a recent report published by the Welcome Trust suggests that the change has in fact had a negative effect, which has resulted in reduced subject status and less teaching time.

The question we therefore now face is how to raise the status of science at KS2 once again.

Art and Design at Key Stage 3 provides students with support, advice and information about their course and the subject and the skills, methods and materials that they will use. SEALSONGS is a collection of assembly songs which aims to get children engaged through the experience of making and creating music. Indeed they sometimes struggle so much that it is possible to believe that these children might be suffering from dyscalculia.

Many parents get information about the school that their child attends through the school’s website. Not surprisingly, therefore, the most common reason given as to why a school has put up a website is as a means to aiding communication with parents of children in the school.

But despite this clarity of aim it is also the case that when schools do surveys concerning the use of their website they find many parents report that they can’t easily find the information that they need – and so end up phoning the school instead.

In trying to work out why this is so, it becomes clear that that the second most common reason for putting up a school website is to communicate with parents who are thinking of sending their children to your school.

So more information gets added to the site, without any thought about what is important to the different people looking at the site.

And as a result of this it can become harder and harder to find what you need on the site.

Sometimes, therefore, it is a good idea to go back to the start and re-consider exactly what someone coming to your website will be looking for, and make sure that everything can be found very readily.

This often involves having separate pathways within the site for different groups of people… one for existing parents which caters for their requirements for information, one for potential parents.

At the same time you have to remember that the majority of those looking at your site will be using a mobile device. So the site needs to be compliant to the latest technology!

Economic well-being has been part of the primary curriculum since Every Child Matters was introduced in 2003.

Metals & Me is an education project for 11 – 16 year olds supported by the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA).

Written by an experienced teacher and reflecting current best practice guidelines, Metals & Me meets many curriculum and syllabus objectives for sustainable development, PSHE and citizenship whilst encouraging students to think about the global environmental implications of the ever-growing demand for metal.

What’s recycling got to do with me? addressing how widely we use metals.
Where do metals come from? comparing the environmental and energy costs of mining vs. recycling.
How does recycling work? explaining how 95% of a domestic appliance can be recovered for reuse.
Twelve classroom activities with support materials that will enable your students to develop their enquiry skills, be involved in decision-making experiences and be actively engaged in finding out about a growing industry that will play an increasingly significant part in their lives, as well as offering job opportunities in the future.
Teachers’ notes with five exemplar lesson plans suggesting ways to link the activities into themed lessons. Each lesson plan is supported by a PowerPoint style presentation for use in the classroom.

The Faculties provides free, short films of university lecturers speaking on topics directly from the A-level curriculum. The subject sites also help students choose a university department that’s right for them and shows them what careers may follow their studies and what employers particularly value in graduates.

Each site has three levels – A levels, universities and careers to explore.

So far there are six “faculties” avaialble on line at www.thefaculties.org – English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, History and Psychology. I mention them all because you might like to pass on details to colleagues in other departments.

It is a simple fact that few schools have access to anyone who is trained in the issue of contracts and Procurement.

As a result, when major purchases are made in schools (such as printing systems, telephone systems, major equipment items for departments, book purchases, etc) it is generally the supplier who writes the contract and sets down the terms and conditions.

Of course, if these contracts were between companies and individuals then the Sale of Goods Act would apply. But with contracts between companies and schools this Act does not apply. While the terms and conditions of a purchase can’t be unfair, they certainly can be written to favour one party (usually the supplier) rather than the other (the school).

Most suppliers are perfectly reasonable people, but they need to make a profit, and the issue therefore is, are they making a reasonable profit or are they trying to exploit the school for their own benefit?
