A worrying number of schools contain asbestos

We all know the dangers associated with asbestos, but how certain can you be that it is not contained within your school?

Worryingly it has been reported that between 200 and 300 former school children and a rising number of teachers die of mesothelioma each year, thought to be caused by the asbestos found in 86% of school buildings across the UK.

It is important that all staff, particularly those responsible for the running of the buildings, are made aware of the potential hazards.  All staff should be instructed not to disturb or damage asbestos containing materials. Damage to school fixtures or fittings that could lead to the release of asbestos fibres need to be reported.

How do I know if asbestos is present and how do we manage it?

The Asbestos Man is able to work with you to devise and implement a comprehensive Asbestos policy that starts with a consultation, followed by a full site survey including the analysis of any suspect materials.

We will compile a user friendly report containing photographs, annotated plans and the appropriate recommendations from the survey findings. Where asbestos has been identified we will then work with you to put in place a management plan so that the occupants of the premises are protected.

For schools where budget does not allow a full site survey we can, in many cases, update an existing survey.

It is a legal requirement to undertake a refurbishment or demolition survey for asbestos containing materials prior to any works taking place.

If you have any enquiries regarding asbestos please do not hesitate to call (quoting reference code HH1):-

Much of the information in this volume is based on research that suggests that many pupils with Dyscalculia don’t succeed at maths because they have not understood the basic concepts required for the more advanced topics.

Thus, Maths & Dyslexia offers a wide range of information on methods of teaching, study skills, placement and progress tests and worksheets for teachers working with pupils who experience difficulties with the four basic functions of maths (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), plus decimals, fractions, and percentages.

You can order Maths & Dyslexia in a variety of ways, including:

If you would prefer to receive Maths & Dyslexia in PDF, simply visit this link, select the ‘International’ option and click the ‘Pay by Credit Card (PayPal)’ button to check out.

What more can primary schools do to ensure that everyone is safe, included, and learning?

This message brings you news of free workshops across England in autumn 2016.

In many schools, responding to a pressure to raise standards, staff concentrate their efforts on teaching the curriculum, with little or no time to explore issues which are not expected to lead directly to better SATs results.

In other schools staff invest equivalent energy in attending to the learning environment: they embrace the challenge of welcoming pupils, staff and visitors in all their diversity and actively engage with different identities and perspectives.

No matter how much, or how little, schools engage with equality issues, all schools have a legal obligation to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty, introduced by the Equality Act 2010.

This is sometimes seen as an additional responsibility, and other times as an integral part of everything that happens in a school.  In some schools, learning to respect one another is understood to be a significant aspect of children’s education.

CSIE is offering a series of FREE equality workshops throughout the country in autumn 2016, supported by Barclays Bank and The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation. Over and above helping schools fulfil their legal duties, these are practical, “hands on” workshops designed to be engaging and constructive.

The workshops are framed around CSIE’s award-winning guide Equality: Making It Happen, a succinct and user-friendly set of reference cards to help schools reduce bullying, address prejudice and promote equality holistically. The guide offers simple and practical advice, as well as links to sources of further information and support. We know of no other initiative addressing all aspects of equality in schools in such an effective and user-friendly way. It will take a long time for our new guide to make an impact on the lives of all pupils in all schools, but for those that it reaches the effect can be decisive.

Each workshop will address: a) what more schools can do to ensure that all pupils are safe, included and learning; and b) how schools can best respond to their legal equality duties and ensure that all protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act 2010 are reflected positively in the curriculum and in everyday school life.

The workshops will:

  • address equality in the context of current challenges in education;
  • provide an overview of the Equality Act 2010;
  • consider the public sector equality duty and its implications for schools;
  • offer clear information on all protected characteristics;
  • present a range of strategies for addressing prejudice and promoting equality;
  • help participants develop confidence and language for discussing sensitive equality issues;
  • provide simple and practical advice for reducing all forms of prejudice-based bullying;
  • consider real-life examples (participants are encouraged to bring their own examples of equality challenges in school);
  • assist in developing a context-specific framework for change.

Who should attend:

The workshops have been designed for primary and secondary school teachers, inclusion managers, pastoral support leaders, senior leaders and governors who care about equality and want to reduce all forms of prejudice-based bulling and discrimination in school. Workshops will also be of interest to equality champions outside schools, for example academy chain or local authority officers and voluntary sector organisations working to promote equality in education.

Cost:

All workshops are free to attend but places are limited and must be booked in advance. These events have been subsidised by Barclays Bank and The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, to both of whom CSIE remains grateful.

Feedback from previous CSIE equality workshops:

“Great!”

“Inspiring.”

“Eloquent and informative.”

“A lot of very practical and very useful information.”

“Excellent content and awareness of legal framework.”

Free workshops have been scheduled to take place in Bristol, Norfolk, Leicester and Reading.  More workshops will be announced in other locations soon.  For more information, or to book your place, please visit www.csie.org.uk/about/training.shtml.

If you want to find out more about these free workshops or about Equality: Making It Happen, or if you have any questions or queries at all, please call 0117 353 3150 or email admin@csie.org.uk.  We look forward to hearing from you and meeting you at one of our workshops.

The simple solution to ensuring a hassle free start to lessons…..

Every now and again I get to chat with current or former teachers and one of the topics that often crops up is why many students don’t seem to be able (or willing) to bring a pen, pencil, ruler etc to their lessons.

In an attempt to solve this problem there’s a product called the “Student Essentials set,” which, as the name suggests, contains all the basics that students need for most of their lessons.

Consisting of three quality black ink ballpens, two full length HB pencils, eraser, 15 cm ruler and a metal sharpener, all packed in a A5 size, clear PVC “exam friendly” wallet with a zip slider.

From just 75p each (ex vat) the “Student Essentials set” is a convenient and cost effective solution to the problem of students who don’t have the correct kit. Full details of the “Student Essentials set” (and other useful products) can be found at: www.signposteducational.co.uk

What is the most common response of schools to the requirement to have comprehensive data protection policies?

Occasionally the Information Commissioner’s Office becomes concerned about lapses in data protection within schools and issues a warning or even a fine.

And indeed for some time now schools have had to have data protection policies in place to ensure that no sensitive data goes astray. However, it seems no one has recently done a survey on what is going on – hence below is a very short questionnaire.

It will take absolutely no more than 3 minutes to complete, and probably less. We don’t ask for the school’s details or anything to identify the school, although if you wish to have a copy of our analysis of the results we’ll happily send that to you if you provide an email address at the end.

There are also details of a free report on data security in schools at the end of the questionnaire.

Please click here to complete the questionnaire.

What is the simplest way to ensure that school breaks suit the need of everyone?

It could be argued that there are three types of people: those who want to move fast, those who want to move slow, and those who don’t want to move at all.

For the first two groups, open space is what is obviously needed, but for the third group there is a need for some form of seating.  Not necessarily anything luxurious, but seating that is functional, and which will survive in all weathers.

Just about the most popular form of such seating is the Earth Anchors Ranger series of steel seats and tables.

Earth Anchors Ranger series are being used by schools across the UK. We have agreed special prices with Hamilton House for this mailing on the most popular items of the range, benches, seats and Tri-Tables.

The Ranger Series

Conceived with schools in mind it is cost-effective, has anti-vandal fittings and comes in a range of colours.

It is designed to be fixed straight into soft earth by via the patented Rootfast Anchorage System or simply by being bolted down into hard surfaces, this outdoor furniture is simple, functional and supplied at a very reasonable cost.

From igloo to cough, we’ve covered every spelling choice and every phonic in the English language

It sometimes comes as a bit of a shock to realise that there are some 90 different spelling and phonic rules in the English language.

They range from troublesome similarities (such as words like “coin” and “toy” with the same sound but different spelling choices), to the six different ways of pronouncing “ough”, not to mention the bizarre collection of words which utilise silent letters.

There is only one way in which dyslexic students can learn the spelling choices for the many different phonics and homophones, and that is through a structured reading and spelling programme.

Which is exactly what MSL has devised: the complete reading and spelling rescue programme.

This programme covers all the 90 different spelling and sound rules and adds in ten sections on issues such as word patterns, suffixes, prefixes, homophones and irregular final syllables, making 100 topics in all.

The 90 rules and associated topics can be seen on our website where you can see the structured order of teaching that we have introduced.

What we have then done is broken these 100 topics down into 20 modules, presented in an order which allows students to use the spelling rules as soon as they have learned them.

As a result of this structured approach, which includes placement & progress tests, you can introduce a dyslexic pupil or student to the sequence from the very start. You can also begin work at a point where the individual will be revising key points, before moving on to areas of weakness, where his/her knowledge becomes erratic.

A copiable version of each module costs £29.99, or you can order five modules together on a CD for £80 plus VAT. All 20 modules are available for £450.

You can order the Reading and Spelling Rescue Programme in any of these ways:

  • On our website (where you can also see full details of the programme)
  • By phone on 01536 399017
  • By fax to 01536 399012

What is simplest and most effective way of developing problem solving skills at KS3?

The answer has to be one that involves giving the students a chance to practice their maths problem solving skills by working through hundreds of tried and tested activities.

And that is exactly what Mind Maths offers: hundreds of problems to solve in a copiable worksheet format complete with comprehensive teaching notes and advice on preparation, planning, plenaries and extension work.

The topics are broken down into four sections: number logic, rules, combinations and sequences, all within a CD containing over 400 pages of activities.

The problems can be used by individual students and within small groups as part of a unit on problem solving, or as extension exercises when students have completed a set piece of work.

They can also be used as elements of short projects on specific mathematical topics, or in an extra-curricular problem solving club.

SOME OF YOUR BITS AIN’T NICE

A classic film that does not date at all.

DVD

1982

10 Minutes

Cartoon about personal hygiene aimed at teenagers.

An animated cartoon in which two teenagers, Buster and Isla discover that life is sweeter if ‘all of their bits are nice’ – and that includes the bits you can’t see! The need to keep hands, hair, teeth, feet, body and clothes clean is presented in a lively way calculated to appeal to teenagers and adults alike.

A review in International Movie DataBase

Wow, I can’t believe this was made in 1982! I honestly thought it was a late sixties-early seventies production, with the stark animation, the white, minimalist backgrounds and the cynical style – it reminded me of Disney’s iconoclastic (for the Disney studio, at least) ‘It’s Tough To Be A Bird’ (I think that was the title) short. Hosted by one Mike Roscope (groan), this educational cartoon preached the importance of good grooming, regular baths, brushing your teeth, changing your clothes and generally being a ‘clean teen’, and the schools I attended from age nine upwards showed it so often, I can still rattle off huge chunks of it to this day.

Roscope telling us “There ain’t nobody that don’t sweat”…”Dirty clothes on a clean Ida don’t make sense”…and that hilarious melancholy ‘WHAAAOWWW’ synthesizer sound that kicked in whenever the boy told the girl (or vice-versa) that “Some of your bits ain’t nice”! A cult classic in the making, I can’t believe there isn’t an internet site devoted to this little beauty. There can’t be a single British schoolkid of my age group (born 1974) who doesn’t remember it.

If you have a look at the photos below of these unique outdoor classrooms we have supplied to special needs schools, how much do you think they cost?

!cid_e054556b8f4769a5724c2a1ccf23878c!cid_2a8e89caaee9079ca2d0f65590891e66!cid_830649ef2484a0ab91319f5de73e5a3f

The real answer to that question should be 2-3 hours of the school’s time. The reason for that is that they used our grant funding service whereby as part of our overall service, we retain the services of a fundraising consultant who specialises in the educational sector…so basically he works alongside us/you to research and identify potential grants to fund our products and this is all done on a speculative, no win no fee basis and therefore does not need to cost you a bean if we do not manage to source you any funds. He does this day in, day out so knows exactly what funders are looking for and how to help you successfully complete the various bid forms. In the past year, we have had a 100% success hit rate for our special needs schools.

Please do have a look at our website for more information on our company and the type of products we can supply to your school but if you had any outdoor learning or playground projects in mind which we could help you find funding for, then we would love to hear from you. We can also give you more details as to how the above service works.

How to get Top Marks in Edexcel French IGCSE Writing Questions

The essay writing questions might seem daunting at first but this is one section of the paper where you, as the candidate, are in control. As long as you answer the questions and cover all the bullet points, you can decide what to write.

This is an easy way to score marks, and the writing sections of the paper count for 30 marks (10 for the shorter writing task and 20 for the longer writing task) which is 25% of the total marks. If you do well in this part of the paper it can make all the difference in being able to move up the grade boundaries.

This pack will explain what is required for the two writing questions for the Edexcel French IGCSE specification. Sample questions will be looked at, with tips for essay techniques, followed by sample essays, with examiners’ comments. Writing tasks from each of the topic areas will be looked at, for both the shorter and longer writing tasks.

The five topic areas are:

Save hours of your valuable time, boost your productivity and reduce stress.

These days you probably find yourself spending more and more time at the computer, answering emails, producing typed documents for various purposes and exploring the internet.  It seems that most teachers now use a keyboard more often than a pen.

Yet, like many UK employees, the majority of teachers have never learned to type properly.  Do you struggle along, prodding away with just two fingers and with your head down?  If so, you will be typing at only about half your potential speed and probably with low levels of accuracy.

With such heavy workloads, wasting valuable time through poor typing skills is inefficient and costly and increases stress.

Type&Test are the UK’s leading specialists in touch-typing training and assessment.  Our online learning programmes are the only ones recommended by Awarding Bodies such as the BCS and the SQA, having been used over the past nine years to prepare learners of all ages for national typing qualifications.

Our unique ‘Type Faster, Work Smarter’ course is guaranteed to significantly increase your typing speed whilst maintaining or improving your accuracy.  The outcome will be that you will increase your output, gain more time, work more productively and reduce your levels of work-related pressure.

Involving a structured interactive online programme, with support from an experienced Type&Test tutor who will communicate with you regularly via email, messaging and skype, you will gain invaluable touch-typing skills through short regular practice sessions which you will complete at times that fit around your busy working day.  After just a few weeks – around the length of a school term – we guarantee that your typing skills will improve significantly or we will refund your course fee in full.

For more information please email enquiries@typeandtest.com with the subject line ‘Type Faster, Work Smarter’ and we will email you our programme flier.  Click here for information from our website.  Or if you want to have a chat about it with no obligation then call Andy Stevenson on 01768 342821.

Confidence and having an open mindset is everything in learning.

As the work of Carol Dweck has proved, no matter how able, a child’s perception of themselves as a learner will determine their academic career. If it is poor, it will:

  • Undermine their resilience, so that they give up at the slightest obstacle
  • Make them defensive learners, unwilling to challenge themselves
  • Make them over-reliant on teachers and on received opinion
  • Write-off successes as ‘flukes’
  • Under-perform in exams and tests
  • Have low aspirations and under-achieve in life

The acclaimed self-perception test Myself As a Learner Scale 8-16+, by Robert Burden, gives teachers, psychologists and researchers a proven technique to gain access to this important aspect of learning development. In fact, the test is the only one that measures a child’s perception of themselves, specifically as learners.

Using it will enable you to:

  • Uncover, beneath external shows of confidence, which children have poor views of themselves as learners and therefore will be liable to under-perform
  • Pinpoint exactly where their problems are
  • Measure progress in developing ‘open-mindsets’ in children

Myself as a Learner Scale 8-16+ is easy to administer, score and interpret. It can be used for gaining information on large cohorts of students or for more clinical purposes with individuals.

It is a valid and reliable scale that can provide a valuable addition to any school’s assessment programme or educational psychologist’s repertoire of assessment techniques.

The Little Box of BIG Questions

Philosophical and meaningful conversations with children and young people

Professor Irvine Gersch & Dr Anna Lipscomb

Children/young people need time, space and kindness to speak openly about the things most important to them and listening can help facilitators understand better the root of children’s thinking and behaviour, and can give an insight into how to better support them to reach their potential. Use these cards to provide prompts for a meaningful, stimulating and positive conversation about the ‘bigger picture’ in life. They will help children and young people understand their views about life, school and people important to them, which is enlightening for the facilitators too.

There are four areas for discussion:

Identity – allows the child to consider what is special about them as individuals & includes: How would you describe the person you are?

Important people – children are encouraged to consider who is important to them through questions such as: Who is special to you?

Meaning & Purpose – questions covering our mission and purpose in life, for example: Do you think that people’s lives are set out for them?

Thinking & Planning – the final set of questions allows individuals to think about how they reflect and make big decisions, for instance: How do you calm your mind, relax and think best? Have you ever experienced a big change in your life?

Contents: 17 A5-size cards, includes instruction booklet with ideas for use

What exactly is it that makes one school computer so much better than another?

No matter how many computers you have bought, that question still remains.  And it remains for one very simple reason.

Even if the last computer/s you purchased for your school were a great success, the chances are that the specification of the models you chose will have changed since that purchase.  So the thinking process starts all over again.

But because we sell computers to schools we have an advantage.  Obviously we look at each new computer that comes along and consider its pros and cons.

But that’s only part one, because when schools buy from us (some accepting our guidance, some following their own thoughts, using us to get the best prices) we keep talking to our customers to find out what they thought of what they bought.

In this way we hold an eternally evolving and indeed unique view of what school IT departments are saying about the IT equipment they are buying.

Some of our current recommended offers are…

Over 150 entertaining, challenging, and open-ended activities which will develop your pupils’ higher level thinking skills

It is often claimed that the National Curriculum no longer encourages children to develop the higher level thinking skills that give them the ability to ‘think outside the box’. Which is why Brilliant Publications has produced Stimulate Creative Thinking.

Stimulate Creative Thinking encourages children to develop their mental agility through an array of challenging activities which take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete – making them ideal for homework tasks, fast finishers, and warm up activities in the morning.

The resource contains over 150 entertaining, open-ended challenges which not only provide mental stimulation but have also been proven to improve children’s overall confidence and self-esteem as there are no correct answers and any input is valued.

Furthermore, the activities require minimal preparation and can be used by any teacher, whatever their area of expertise.

You can order Stimulate Creative Thinking in a variety of ways, including:

Boys don’t cry? Supporting the emotional and mental health of boys and young men

“Teachers should be given training in working more effectively with boys to support healthier mental and emotional development and the skills to manage health services.”

The Mengage workshop  ‘ Boys don’t cry? Supporting the emotional and mental health of boys and young men’ provides teachers, teaching assistants and others involved in work with young males on this concern with a workshop exploring:

  • Act like a boy: what research has to say about the emotional and mental health of boys and young men
  • Issues and concerns: bullying, sexuality, peer pressure, relationships, pornography, body-image, exclusion, pressure to succeed/exams…
  • Being practical: what can schools do to support and enhance the emotional and mental health of boys and young men?  Action planning and implementation.

The 3 hour informal workshop is based on research and proven practical work with boys and young men, providing teachers, support staff, and staff from affiliated professions with knowledge about a concern that not only affects school performance but can have an impact across the lifespan – and an opportunity to consider practical solutions schools can implement to address this concern.

What are the three steps to identifying dysgraphia?

Step one: Compare your student’s handwriting with other students’ handwriting of the same age

Step two: Identify what is making his or her handwriting appear to be of poor quality:

Does his or her handwriting contain oversized letters and punctuation?
Are there inconsistencies in the size of consecutive letter?
Are letters and words written at
an inconsistent angle?
Is
his or her handwriting spaced inconsistently?
Are letters and words written in the wrong order?
Does
his or her handwriting contain more spelling mistakes than you would expect?
Does he or she often cross out his or her work and rewrite it?

Step three: Identify why the handwriting is of poor quality – What causes dysgraphia? A student with dysgraphia will often have problems with his or her language processing, fine motor skills, memory recall, pen/pencil grip, handwriting posture and/or visual spacing.

Dysgraphia Help offer an online dysgraphia test for pupils over 8 years old for £32 which can act as a preliminary diagnosis. The test consists of 50 questions and after completion of the test and submitting a handwriting sample you will receive a report within 72 hours.

You can find more information about Dysgraphia Help’s Online Dysgraphia Test at www.dysgraphiahelp.co.uk/testing-for-dysgraphia/.

This is why MALS has gone around the world as the key test to use to measure a child’s image of themselves as learners and thinkers.

Outdoor learning helps children develop and improve social skills, says new report

A Kent environmental education centre that works with schools across the UK and Europe has been praised for improving children’s self-esteem, confidence, and social skills through its residential trips.

According to a new report assessing the effectiveness of outdoor learning at Rippledown, in Ringwould near Deal, the centre’s residential programmes allow children to “gain a sense of their own individual interests, strengths and abilities” as well as “nature connection, hope and dietary awareness”.

The report follows a study by Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and leading environmental education charity The Bay Trust, which runs Rippledown, on the impact and influence of the centre’s programme on children’s learning and wellbeing.

Three primary schools took part in the study, one from a rural part of Kent and two from an urban and suburban area of London. Some 50 children aged between 9 and 10 participated in team activities such as shelter building, using navigational tools such as map and compass, a walk to the beach, treasure hunting, and mini beast hunting.

Data gathered from an anonymous questionnaire, which was completed a week before, a week after, and a month after the children’s residential stay, suggests that their experience enabled them to gain a greater sense of their own competence, connection to nature, hope, and resilience, as well as developing a healthier dietary awareness.

Using hand-written journals created with natural objects, youngsters were also encouraged to give their opinions of Rippledown and describe their feelings inspired by photographs set in a natural environment.

The findings highlight how children view and interact with the outdoors, with responses including “being outdoors makes me happy” and “my actions will make the natural world different”. They also demonstrate the children’s positive coping skills while away from home.

How can schools create a manageable computing journey at Key Stage 2 when there are so many free tools to use?

In the run up to the launch of the new computing curriculum, as well as after it was phased in, there was a collective intake of breath from teachers up and down the country as they absorbed what it all meant.

For many teachers the notion of writing and debugging programs or explaining simple algorithms was well beyond their every-day experience and certainly not in their training.

Fortunately at the time there was already a string of free web based tools out there to use and a couple of these have proved really successful like Scratch from MIT & Daisy the Dinosaur.

Thankfully, it also seems sometimes that many children tend to be a little more fearless with technology – a strength when it comes to Computing!

With all the free tools that some school enthusiasts started to champion it soon became apparent that while they were free there was little if any support or influence on how products developed – how could there be if the tool was free?

The result for some schools has been a bird’s nest of logins for different tools, varying user interfaces, unreliable work saving and patchy levels of school service. Factors like these undermine teacher confidence who just want it to work. Schools love saving money but when the cost is not having a reliable learning environment then its surely too high.

The mission at Blippit has been to get key elements of the computing curriculum under one roof and to help develop curious learners through authentic learning – even to the point of publishing apps (with the teacher’s approval) on our free app store, Planet Blippit.

Blippit IO, through its powerfully simple tools, opens the door to computational thinking, logical reasoning and unexpectedly – writing.  You can use our templates or just create your own.

Why do English teachers take part-time qualifications in creative writing and literature from the University of Cambridge?

We all tend to have our own reasons for approaching each course we take and each additional qualification we work towards.

Some courses can cover an aspect of a syllabus that one is teaching and which has not been central to one’s studies in the past. Some take participants into the world of creative writing, and some involve original research.

And then the status and credibility of the awarding body is also important, not just for the quality of the teaching and the work, but also in terms of how the qualification will look on our CV should we wish to apply for a new post at some time in the future.

This coming academic year the University of Cambridge is offering a range of part time courses in Creative Writing and English Literature of relevance to English teachers, starting this October. Brief details are given below, and more information is available on our website.

The Certificate in Creative Writing I  starts by considering different forms of fiction – such as the novel, flash fiction, and short stories. Using published works and their own writing, those on the course examine the difference between fiction and other forms of writing such as poetry.

The second unit studies the structure of a range of novels to see how different authors have followed or subverted the “rules”, while the final unit considers the ways in which a piece written for performance tells its story and engages with its audience.

The Certificate in Creative Writing II looks in depth at creative non-fiction and the different forms of writing it involves, such as writing about food, narrative history, popular science, comic writing, and the essay.  It then considers the importance of creating a memorable sense of place, while the final unit explores “life writing”, such as memoir, biography, letter, and diary writing.

The Diploma in Creative Writing I focusses on advanced techniques for identifying a potential story, constructing a coherent sense of time and place, keeping dramatic control, etc. The second unit examines different approaches to structure and the use of pace, drama, description, characterisation, and humour.

The final unit considers the tradition of writing inspired by art, exploring sculpture, portraiture, landscapes, and modern art to observe the evolution of word-and-image in world literature.

The Diploma in Creative Writing II starts with historical fiction from Tudor England to Cold War Germany, considering issues from creating convincing flashbacks to the interweaving of storylines from different points in history.

The second unit on Advanced Crime Writing considers key elements in all such writing, such as the compelling plot, convincing dialogue, a strong sense of place, and accurate research in different types of crime novels such as: “urban noir”, “rural noir”, “Scandi noir”, as well as true crime.

The final unit studies techniques used in writing for TV, film, stage, and radio along with the art of adapting a story from one medium to another.

The above certificate and diploma courses can be taken individually or sequentially in any order.

The Diploma in English Literature I focusses initially on the adaptation of literary works into film and other forms, examining questions of genre, authorship, and form, using examples from Shakespeare, Emily Bronte, and Lewis Carroll, and filmic works by directors including Stanley Kubrick, Andrea Arnold, and Jane Campion.

The second unit looks at a range of major writers in poetry and prose, encompassing the religious debates that characterise much 17th-century writing and focussing on how each writer manifests his particular concerns in the minutiae of form and style.

The final unit considers matters of place, identity, and the spirit of discovery in a range of 19th- and 20th-century works, questioning what it once meant to travel and settle in the age of empire.

Finally the Advanced Diploma in English Literature is a part-time research-based course which offers students the opportunity to undertake supervised independent study over two academic years, culminating in a dissertation of 10,000-12,000 words on a topic of their devising.

The course provides a good foundation in research methods for those who wish to continue with their research at a higher level, either through a postgraduate course or on their own initiative.

Alternatively if you’d like to dip your toe in the water or explore a specific topic, we also offer a range of short courses throughout the year.

You can find out more about all the above courses and apply online by 5 September on our website

Alternatively, you can contact me directly with specific enquiries on 01223 746 417 or email me at enquiries@ice.cam.ac.uk.

What is the simplest way of making philosophical arguments accessible to students?

Understanding philosophical argument requires a knowledge of the fundamentals such as logic, argument, empiricism, rationalism, justification, scepticism…

But the study of these concepts can become rather dry and removed from the work of philosophers unless presented in a way that relates to the world of the student, taking them from their own world to these different approaches to that world.

This approach makes the concepts accessible and comprehensible to students before getting into the application of these concepts through the work of specific philosophers and their approaches.

Thus in this volume we look at moral philosophy which takes the student through utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics, to practical ethics looking at topics such as abortion and voluntary euthanasia, and to meta-ethics.

There is also a separate section on the philosophy of region covering ideas of God, cosmological ontological and teleological arguments, faith, reason and belief, and the implications of God’s existence.

After each argument there is an explanation – where necessary – of each part of the argument, followed by discussion of any problems or issues arising. Finally there are questions and points for discussion.

Some of the material on God and Moral Philosophy will also be useful to students of A level Religious Studies whose course includes some Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. Of particular relevance are sections on: arguments for the existence of God; faith, reason and belief; religious experience; God and morality; miracles.

Starting and ending the lesson

There’s not much doubt that if the start and end of a lesson can be particularly enjoyable or exciting for the students, then the memory of the lesson itself that they hold will be more positive.

And that, of course, raises the enthusiasm with which the lesson is approached next time around.

With this in mind science teacher Rosamund Rogers produced a series of science crosswords and short-answer tasks focussing on GCSE science topics.

The subject matter ranges from scientific instruments and lab equipment through to the electromagnetic spectrum, via food chains, classifying vertebrates, gases, gears and light.

Some of the pages cover mixed topics as in the inevitable odd one out, the famous scientists and names given to studies of certain subjects. But most are set firmly in one area of work (‘Parts of the Human Body’, ‘Motion of an object’, ‘The Planets’ etc).

The collection  includes more such activities than you are likely to need each year and can be set as homework, revision studies, or (if you are so minded) co-operative learning in the class. It is available as a photocopiable book – and thus just one copy is needed, and can be used repeatedly within the school.

Sample pages from Science Crosswords and Short Answer Tasks are available at www.pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/science/T1684.pdf

Lord of the Flies – An Abridged Text

Quite often the content of the National Curriculum can be intractable for pupils who speak English as a second language. The teaching of English can now be made wholly accessible using set texts which have been effectively differentiated so that they are understood by pupils who may find the original version difficult.

This pdf workbook has been designed for use with the novel ‘Lord of the Flies’ written by William Golding. Demonstrate to your students that music diversity exists and inspire your young musicians to try something new.

As a musician it can be surprising when someone says that they do not possess an interest in music. Not least because music is so different from one genre to the next, from one decade to the next, and from one culture to the next.

Thus, it is not typically the case that these people are disinterested in music, but rather that they have not yet experienced a style of music that they are naturally drawn to.

Indeed, to demonstrate this music diversity to your students you could take them to see the Palestine Youth Orchestra at Town Hall Birmingham at the end of the month (29 July 2016).

The Palestine Youth Orchestra (PYO) brings a musical programme featuring Arabic songs from Egypt and Lebanon alongside contemporary British music, Beethoven, and Mussorgsky’s much loved musical interpretation of an art gallery.

The PYO was established with the vision of bringing together young Palestinian musicians from around the world as one ensemble. And over its first decade, it has performed throughout the Middle East and Europe.

How to… acquire a brand-new school minibus for half the cost

A growing number of schools are finding that by sharing their minibus with a nearby school, they can halve the running costs of the minibus and thus reduce their expenditure on school trips and away games by a considerable amount.

Moreover, a growing number of schools are finding that by sharing a leased school minibus (meaning that there is no initial large payment required – just a monthly lease fee) as opposed to one which has been purchased outright, their costs are further reduced.

Better still, in leasing a school minibus with Benchmark, any repairs, servicing and the like are included in the arrangement and the costs are conveniently built into the lease.

If you haven’t leased a minibus or thought about sharing one, please do give me a call on 01753 859944 and I can talk you through how it all works.

But if you want to take a look at who we are and what we do before you call, you’ll find more information about leasing at www.minibusleasing.co.uk.

What is the single most effective way to protect the floor of the sports hall from damage during exam times?

Although the sports hall is only used for exams maybe once or twice a year for a period of no longer than two months, it is at these times that the floor can suffer the most damage. Which is why we have devised the Smartsquare system.

The Smartsquare system is made up of 2m x 1m protection pieces which will prevent the floor of your sports hall being dented and scratched by desks and chairs during exam periods. Moreover, it will reduce the distraction caused by noise during exams (invigilators’ footsteps, movement of chairs…) which are often amplified due to the echoey nature of sports halls.

The process of laying and taking up the protection pieces is made easy by the fact that Smartsquare systems come with a purpose-built Smartcart trolley designed to hold approximately 200m² flooring.

What’s more, when not in use the protection pieces pack away easily. The trolley is built with non-marking wheels and once packed up the average school only requires between 4m² and 7m² of floor space for storage.

Smartsquare can be purchased outright or bought on a lease over a period of time. It is also available on a two-week free trial – along with a Smartcart – so you can try it out for yourself.

And best of all it is very easy to clean. Indeed if you were ever to get a badly soiled tile you simply take it outside, hose it down and leave to dry.

You can read more about Smartsquare on our website

Or if you would like to talk about these possibilities please do call us on 01302 836777 or email jon@smart-square.co.uk.

Something to consider when preparing your dining hall for a higher than usual September intake

If you require more seating in the dining hall to accommodate increased numbers of pupils, Versa Design has designed a table which is arguably the most space-efficient mobile table in the world.

With the Benchmark table, space optimisation comes as standard as (for example) six tables require less than 5ft x 8ft of space when packed away, with each additional table adding just 11-inches to the nested depth.

And when the tables are set out the extended table-tops and end-to-end positioning (with no gaps between table-tops) will massively increase the dining capacity of your school’s dining hall.

The Benchmark table has safety at the forefront of its design with locking latches, anti-glide legs, and DoubleGuard anti-tipping feet, and has a built-in Lift Assist System to provide controlled operation when setting out and packing away the tables.

Furthermore, all Benchmark tables can, if you choose, be customised with a graphic of your choice and are covered by a manufacturer’s 15-year warranty.

What is the simplest way for a left handed person to achieve perfect handwriting?

Many left handed pupils and students find handwriting difficult.   Some reverse d’s and b’s, some smudge their work, some report physical discomfort, such as backache and hand ache as they write.

Yet although many left handed people battle on with this problem, the solution to the issue left handed people face in writing is quite simple: it is to provide them with pens that are designed specifically for those who write with their left hand.

This is the issue we have approached, and after considerable experimentation and research we evolved the ideal solution – a pen with an S bend neck and grip area.

Swanneck

Such a pen enables left-handed writers to hold the pen comfortably at a balanced angle and easily view all letters and words as they are written.  In other words the left handed writer and the right handed writer are now set up on an equal footing.

Indeed so successful was the experimentation that led to the production of this solution, the resultant Swan Neck Pens have passed all the requisite British Standards approvals including EN71 part 1, 2, 3 and BS7272 2008.

You can see a video of the pen being used by a left handed writer here.

Obviously these pens are now being sold to left-handed adults for their own use and for use by their children, but we are also currently offering a special 20% educational discount.  This is available to schools if you quote the reference “Learning 0124” and where we are delivering to the school address.

Why discussing Christmas with your pupils is perhaps one of the most effective ways to develop their cultural understanding and awareness

Christmas is generally a time of generosity and kindness, but in many other ways Christmas can vary enormously from one culture to the next as traditions take root and evolve over time.

Furthermore, not only is Christmas celebrated in a different way from one culture to the next, but it is not always celebrated at the same time of year. And whilst some countries have no holiday at this time, one country has managed to get two Christmas holidays a year!

This country is Australia, where the traditional English style of Christmas cards with the robins in the snow-covered environment are regularly exchanged. But because December is in the middle of summer, a lot of Australians also have a “Winter Christmas” holiday in June.

In Ethiopia and Eritrea Christmas is not on December 25, but can either be on 7 or 27 January.  And rather than being accompanied by a larger than normal amount of eating, it is related to a 40 day Fast of the Prophets.

In China Christmas is not a public holiday, but that has not stopped many Chinese people increasingly celebrating the traditions of western Christmas and importing Christmas designs into the shopping areas.

So the story continues. Christmas is different everywhere – and yet in many countries the images of Christmas remain the same. The presents may be given on Christmas Eve in many countries, but the idea of Christmas has spread almost worldwide.

Which is why there are so many Christmas stories from around the world which originate in different traditions but which are all recognisable as part of Christmas.

And it is this vast array of ways of celebrating Christmas which lives on in a whole variety of different stories and different storytelling styles – stories that encourage children to expand their cultural awareness at the same time as developing their literacy skills, while enjoying the fun of Christmas.

Snail Tales specialises in telling Christmas stories that reflect the multiplicity of ways in which people across the world relate to Christmas.  We tell stories in assemblies and in individual classes and include a free after-school INSET with every whole day booking.

What is the most effective way of helping students come to terms with all the key topics within the subject?

One of the problems that some students face when coming to the philosophy of religion is that of the multiplicity of concepts.  They learn about verification and falsification, but then as other new issues arise, that piece of knowledge slips from their mind…

What is needed is a quick and easy way of going back and being reminded of each of the topics that arise within the philosophy of religion course, so that when there is any uncertainty (for example, half way through writing an essay) they can resolve that at once.

With this in mind Francis Beswick created a straightforward book which can be photocopied, or put on the school network and made available to everyone, and which covers 22 of the key topics within the philosophy of religion.

Thus every student taking A level religion, and those in the sixth form who are interested in such topics, can get an immediate insight into the issues.

Each topic is dealt with in a short article (usually around 1000 words) which gives the student an immediate awareness of the key points within the topic and which is ideal both as a basic learning resource and as a source for revision when needed.

The essential philosophical arguments covered in this book are supplemented by research topics and discussion points which will make philosophical language more accessible and enjoyable for your students.

Topics within the volume include: Design Arguments; religious experience; verification and falsification; theories of revelation; near death experiences; life after death and reincarnation, etc.

The essential philosophical arguments covered in this book are supplemented by research topics and discussion points which will make philosophical language more accessible and enjoyable for your students.

What makes successful schools successful? And what makes them continue to build on their success?

It is a simple but nonetheless valid observation. No organisation – and more particularly no school – improves by itself. Schools get better because someone (or more often some people) put energy into improving the school.

But is that it?  A round of improvement, an inspectors’ report, and then “steady-as-she-goes”?

Of course, that is one way of working, but there is a problem.  Because any organisation that is then left alone will slowly start to become inefficient.   Processes will change, corners will be cut, issues will be missed.

This is not a criticism of teachers or schools – it is simply the ways things are. The only way around this is constant improvement.

Now this approach, which has become increasingly common in business in the past ten years, is something that many teachers and managers resist.   The old phrase, “Why can’t you just leave me alone to get on with the teaching?” can readily be heard in response.

And yet, as the schools that use this approach have found, such an approach puts no strain on the school, and the result can be extraordinary.

Better still, the ever improving school is most certainly not in a state of constant revolution.  Rather the schools that adopt this approach work carefully from department to department, instituting changes step by step, and not moving on to the next department until the previous department is once again settled and secure.

In short, we are talking about a mechanism for bringing change into a school with the full co-operation and agreement of each department in turn.  An approach which runs continuously without in any way disrupting the working on the school on a daily basis.

It is an approach that recognises that there may be some resistance to change, but has built within it ways of overcoming that resistance.

And better still, there is no chance of the school, having improved, resting on its laurels. It continues and it grows, for as long as the leadership of the school want the process to continue.

The entire process is described in The Ever Improving School, a report commissioned and produced by the School of Educational Administration and Management – a body set up with government funding and the support of the Faculty of Education at the University of Northampton.

The Ever Improving School is available in copiable form (as a printed volume or on CD) so that it can be distributed to all interested members of staff.

Classic stage plays on DVD featuring top actors

Hello,

If you’re looking for a great way to make end-of-term learning a bit different with a lot to enjoy, then our classic stage plays on DVD could be just the ticket.

Stage on Screen plays are all popular choices on leading exam curriculums, but even if your students are not focusing on any of them directly, they’re perfect complements for anyone studying Shakespeare or other early modern dramatists.

Our current titles are as follows:

Dr Faustus – themes from this Marlowe classic are echoed in Macbeth in particular, but also Othello, Timon of Athens and other plays. Marlowe heavily influenced Shakespeare, and with this, probably his finest play, it’s easy to see why.

Volpone – another play that has echoes in Othello, but which is also interesting for comparison of Jonson’s more classical approach to drama when compared to Shakespeare, his contemporary and great friend.

The Duchess of Malfi – this dark masterpiece by John Webster finds many echoes in Shakespeare with its themes of corruption, cruelty and class, while the use of madness makes an interesting comparison with its treatment in Hamlet.

The School for Scandal – this Richard Brinsley Sheridan comedy of manners was written much later of course, and we can’t by any stretch describe it (let alone him) as a Shakespearean companion. However, we mention it here as it makes up the fourth of our current available titles and, like the others, it’s on many curriculums in its own right. As we currently offer all four titles for a special price, you may wish to consider it.

Approved texts – and all round approval

Each play uses full approved texts (other filmed productions are often heavily cut or adapted), and each is staged and recorded live in front of an audience at London’s Greenwich Theatre.

They’ve all received excellent reviews from students, teachers and academic journals plus mainstream and specialist press.

Here are just a couple:

‘Pitched perfectly to suit both casual and academic audiences, Stage on Screen offers an unparalleled array of material on these productions that will be a welcome addition to those who wish to study early modern dramatists.’ (The Shakespeare Bulletin)

‘..Unlike many modern productions of the classics, Stage on Screen productions are rarely cut, putting pupils who see them at a distinct advantage.’  (Times Education Supplement)

You can see clips from each play at https://www.youtube.com/user/StageOnScreen/

Buy all four titles and enjoy big savings

Each play is available in special Education Packs, which include three DVDs: the play (with optional subtitles); extensive interviews with the theatre company; and a master-shot recording, invaluable for teaching stagecraft, lighting and blocking. Our DVDs play on any system worldwide.

Available for £35.98 for each 3-disc title on Amazon, this special offer gets you the box set of all four titles for just £100 plus P&P, and VAT (if applicable). To order, just email stephen@hamilton-house.com with your completed order form. Alternatively, call us on +44 (0) 20 3174 3249.

If ordering from outside the UK, we’ll automatically convert the cost to your currency at that day’s exchange rate. (Currently, £100 is around US$145 or €130.)

Best wishes,
