What is the easiest way to give applicants and colleagues a feeling for work in a nursery and all that it can involve?

While reading about the work of nurseries and Sure Start Centres can teach us a lot, videos provide a much more meaningful experience for those who wish to get insights into what the day to day work with very young children is really all about.

All the videos listed below can be purchased outright or bought through our video on demand service. In each case you can watch a clip from the video on our website by following the link provided.

I Don’t Need Toys  A film about play in the first two years of life.  (18 Mins)

This film depicts babies and toddlers at play in the home environment, playing with household, natural and recycled objects as they discover, learn and gain enormous pleasure and satisfaction. At all times the babies and children are being supervised by a caring adult (with whom they have secure relationships) although the adults are rarely visible in the film.   More details here

Individual Differences: Infancy to Early Childhood (16 Mins)

Our individuality is created by genetic traits and the environment we explore as babies.  This film explores individuality and the broad range of characteristics that are considered normal. Tests devised to separate personality differences from traits that indicate developmental problems, are shown.  More details here

Infant Hearing Tests in three infant age groups. (28 Mins)

The video shows demonstrations of how to test the hearing of three age groups including the Distraction Test (6-18 months), Co-operative Test (18-30 months) and Performance Test (30+ months). Testing a hearing-impaired child is also demonstrated.  More details here.

Soft Baby Yoga: Yoga stretching for very young children, in an atmosphere of play. (17 Mins)

This step by step guide shows how to make full use of your baby’s natural love of movement and offers a very enjoyable way to encouraging a full range of versatile movement to maintain flexibility as a baby strengthens.   More details here.

Aggression in Young Children: Is hitting, biting and bullying normal? (16 mins)

If such behaviour is considered “normal” when does such behaviour start and when and how should we intervene to stop it?   These are indeed fundamental questions, because if we do consider aggression to be a normal part of young children’s behaviour, then that will affect the way we deal with it at school.

This two-disc DVD set uses direct observations filmed in natural settings and includes exercises, quizzes and interviews with experts on childhood aggression and offers a comprehensive guide to the subject.  More details here.

Speech and Language Therapy with Children: The development of oral communication skills (16 mins)

This programme looks at all aspects of the development of oral communication skills in children and some of the specific difficulties children experience. It shows in detail therapists working with children with various difficulties.  More details here

Yoga Gym: Animal Stretches: Teaching 3 to 7 year olds elementary stretches relating to animals.   (20 mins)

Children love and enjoy these stretches which maintain muscular suppleness and improve the flexibility of all the major joints. These stretches can be used on a one-posture-a-day basis or woven into a simple story and will maintain good posture and a wide range of versatile movement.

This is also a fun way for children to reduce nervous tension and muscular armouring and restore emotional balance and agility.  More details here.

A Day in the Life of a Day Nursery

This Detailed description of the work of a day nursery is an excellent guide to the demonstration of competencies which explains to the viewer the philosophy of good child care and its relationship with the everyday tasks of caring and nurturing the development of children in her/his care.

This 90 minute DVD is an ideal video to show to parents who are contemplating sending their child to a nursery for the first time, and to volunteers and first-time applicants for jobs who need an introduction to what nursery school life is about.

You can read more about the video and also see an extract from it here.

The Road Home

This film demonstrates the importance of one to one attachment for the emotional development of babies and young children and reflects on what happens when that attachment is not available.

The video will be of great benefit to anyone who is working with children who have not been able to form attachments in their lives thus far.

You can read more about the video and also see an extract from it here.

Getting the Feel of Things

In this film two two-year olds explore unfamiliar objects with their senses.  They move slowly and thoughtfully, absorbing what they find, and present what is for many people an unusual view of young children.

You can read more about the video and also see an extract from it here.

Cognitive Development

This American film gives a fairly comprehensive overview of current psychological theories of development, covering Piaget’s work and the work of behaviourist psychologists.

The ideas of Bruner and Kagan are contrasted with Piaget via examples from different schools which have adopted different approaches.  You can read more about the video and also see an extract from it here.

Through the Eyes of a Child

This video shows approaches to ways of helping people enter a child’s world. Small happenings, such as going on a bus, an encounter with a dog, and playing in the garden are seen through a child’s eyes,

You can read more about the video and also see an extract from it here.

The Psychology of the Pre-School Child – Part 1

Five children aged from three and a half to five years talk about their interests and fears, their attitudes to parents and grownups, the dreams they have and their desires to be older than they are. They demonstrate early defence mechanisms and various elements of sibling rivalry.

You can read more about the video and also see an extra from it here.

The Anna Freud Nursery School

This video looks at the running of a nursery school for children age 2 to 5 showing the principles and practise underlying the daily running of a group of 13 children aged 2 1/2 to 5 years.

You can read more about the video and also see an extra from it here.

Young Children in Brief Separation (five films in this series each featuring a different child)

At 17 months John is a placid, easy to manage child.

He spends nine days in a residential nursery. The nurses are young and friendly, but the system of care does not allow any one of them to substitute for the absent mother.

This film represents  a microcosm of the human dilemma of how to give appropriate care to those in need, whether they be infants, the aged, the mentally ill, or prisoners, all of whom need stable, supportive relationships.

You can read more about the video here.

Please note this video is not available on video on demand.

Make sure your nursery is at the front of the queue

At last!  Parliament is listening to the needs of Early Years. A report ‘Mental Health in Childhood’ was published on 26th June by an All-Party Parliamentary Group.  This is expected to influence over the next few months government funding and policies to transform children’s mental health.

When they are, there is expected to be a rush to train or recruit play therapy practitioners who meet the report’s recommendations, to work with young children showing signs of social, emotional and behaviour problems.

To get ahead, you can take advantage, at virtually no cost, of the APAC/Leeds Beckett University placement scheme for trainees.  During the Autumn term we expect to have 200 new trainees available for a placement.

The scheme will provide 100 hours of therapy for your children at no cost for one year.  They will provide a complete service including briefing your staff, assessments, parent interviews and communications as well regular activity and outcome reports meeting all professional and data protection requirements.

The only ‘costs’ to your school are the provision of a suitable room with equipment and materials which you probably already have and a few hours of staff time for referral and review meetings.

We have thirteen training venues throughout the UK so whilst we cannot guarantee that a placement will be available in your area, there’s a very good chance, especially if you apply now.

Of course, as an alternative, you can guarantee a trainee by funding a member of your staff.

Please contact me at mokijep@majemail.com for more information on placement and training opportunities.

How to do more to help parents

Have you observed any children who have:

  •  Relationship difficulties at home and in the nursery?
  • Anger management problems?
  • Attachment issues?
  • A lack of self-esteem & confidence?
  • Adjustment issues?
  • Suffered bereavement of a close relative?
  • Experience of domestic violence?
  • Signs of ADHD?

These are the eight top children’s emotional well-being problems.  If not detected and dealt with at an early stage, they are likely to develop into more serious conditions requiring therapy which in some cases may be for many years.

The good news is that if these problems are at an early stage and the degree of severity is only slight, you can coach the parent(s) in how to use play at home for only ten minutes a day to resolve them.

Help the children, help the parents, increase your income.

Just contact me at mokijep@majemail.com or phone 01825 761143 for a discussion.

What is the most effective way of ensuring that the children at your nursery are getting the most out of their learning?

Information overload is experienced by everyone and can lead to forgetfulness, confusion and misunderstandings, among a few. But information overload is perhaps more of an issue for young children, not least because they lack a knowledge-base which aids the understanding of a new topic or concept.

With this in mind, it is important for children to regularly revise their new-found knowledge, which is something that can be achieved through creative activities. And this is why we have produced: Creative Activities for the Early Years.

Creative Activities for the Early Years contains a wealth of creative activities covering a number of themes, such as The Sea, Autumn, Night-time, Rain, Insects, Clocks, and the Farmyard. So when the children at your nursery return from a trip to the farm, their new knowledge can be confirmed and any misunderstanding can be brought to your attention.

What’s more, this resource is not only an effective tool for revision, but is also a great way to introduce new topics and concepts, and can be used as a reference for activity ideas to celebrate Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year.

For more information or to order Creative Activities for the Early Years for £17.99 as a printed book, £12.99 as an e-pdf, or both for £21.89, please visit:

What is the most effective way of promoting an interest in different cultures

An important aspect of learning is the ability to understand and appreciate other cultures.

Here are some reasons why children should be encouraged to learn about different cultures:

Firstly, other cultures are interesting. It is stimulating to learn about those who are different from you.

Knowledge of other cultures kindles the mind. Learning about other cultures is an interesting way to challenge your thought processes and expand the way you process information.

Learning about other cultures fosters understanding. Many of the problems we have in this world are due to misunderstandings. When you learn about another culture, and see why others do the things they do, it’s easier to understand them.

When you learn about other cultures, you learn that there is more than one approach to life. Perhaps the cultural heritage of someone else can add another dimension to your life.

Being able to tolerate others, and not berate them because of their differences is not only a big part of living in a global community, but it is also the mark of a well-rounded person. Travel enables the meeting and learning about other cultures and customs leading to a richer experience.

Unfortunately, it is not every child who will have the opportunity to travel at a very young age.

Thus, the question arises: how can we introduce pupils to a different culture?

Reading is an opportunity to learn about other cultures.

A fun way to be introduced to a different culture is through the Inca Book Series.

If you would like to learn more about the Inca Book Series there is an immediate opportunity on the website –

Why play therapy support of your children is not an option

If your nursery aims to provide a complete service for your parents and support for all your children, a play therapy service is essential – not just an option.

It’s estimated that 20% of all UK children suffer from some type of social, emotional, behaviour or other mental health problem.  The earlier they get help the better.  But it must be safe and effective – not by unqualified, unregistered, unsupervised persons.  Play therapy has a success record of between 77% and 84% when therapy is delivered to Play Therapy UK standards.

If you are not already using a therapist on the Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists there’s two main ways:

You can find out a lot more about the skills required and the experiential methods of training that we use by attending a one day introduction to play therapy course (13 venues in the UK): http://www.playtherapy.org.uk/Training/TrainCrseAPACIntrod1day

Phone: Dee Rose on 01825 761143 for more details and availability.

If you would like to have a chat about providing a play therapy service and the options in more detail please email Monika at: mokijep@majemail.com

What is perhaps the most effective way to ensure that the learning and development of a child isn’t hindered due to his or her anxiety?

When we consider that most children experience anxiety at some point in their time at nursery school, from separation anxiety to social anxiety, it’s important that there is something in place to help relieve the symptoms that typically hinder an anxious child’s learning and development.

Something which has proven to build confidence and ease anxiety over time, not only for young children but for people of all ages, is the use of drama activities. Which is why, with this in mind, we have developed the resource: Drama Activities for the Early Years.

Drama Activities for the Early Years contains 80 clearly laid out and ready-to-use practical drama activities relating to every area of the curriculum, to enable any practitioner to lead and develop dramatic work with confidence and enthusiasm.

The book explains the theories and values behind the activities and how to harness children’s natural abilities and enthusiasm. This way, practitioners with no previous drama experience can confidently create enjoyable and productive learning experiences.

In order to develop vital self-confidence and social skills children need frequent, regular opportunities to work in groups and to express themselves through drama. Thus the resource contains a topic index which links the activities to popular early years themes and interests, making it easy to plan drama sessions or to find a suitable activity for any occasion.

For more information and to see sample materials from Drama Activities for the Early Years, visit https://www.brilliantpublications.co.uk/book/drama-activities-for-the-early-years-453. And if you have any questions about the resource, you can email orders@tradecounter.co.uk.

You can order Drama Activities for the Early Years on our website either in PDF for £12.99 or as a hardcopy paperback book for £17.99. There is also the option to buy the paperback and PDF together at a discounted price of £21.89.

Surprises about children’s psychological problems

ADHD and autistic spectrum are not the main reasons why children are referred to therapeutic support.  Our research shows that children’s problems are many and varied.  58 different issues have been recorded of which 24 account for 56% of the total.  ADHD and Autistic Spectrum which receive considerable publicity are only ranked 7th and 11th.   Attachment issues,  family relationship difficulties, adjustment issues, anger, anxiety and experience of domestic violence, account for 45% of the total.

Assuming that support of the parents as well as the children are key mission objectives nursery schools have an excellent opportunity to fulfil these objectives and increase revenue.

Help the children and their parents by providing a Play Therapy service – one that it is delivered by registered practitioners where quality, safety and effectiveness is warranted.

If your nursery is not yet providing play therapy, there are two main options:

I ) Contact your nearest Play Therapy UK registrant to see if one is available to see your children: www.playtherapyregister.org.uk

2) Invest in training one of your staff as a Registered Practitioner in Therapeutic Play Skills.  You will then have a value added service to increase your revenue.

You can experience how play therapy works, the skills needed and how we train using mainly experiential exercises, by attending a one-day ‘Introduction to Play Therapy’ course held at 13 convenient venues throughout the UK. Phone: 01825 761143 for details

It’s all about attachment

Many adult, adolescent and childhood psychological problems may be traced to attachment issues in early childhood.

How many of the children attending your nursery exhibit these problems through repeated outbursts, crying, clinging or withdrawal?

You can help them and their parents through Play Therapy – provided that it is delivered by registered practitioners.

An evidence base, built over the last 12 years using actual practice data from over a thousand schools, shows that between 77% and 84% of those receiving play therapy delivered to Play Therapy UK standards show a positive change, as observed by teachers and parents. Now with over 20,000 measures, the evidence base is highly reliable.

If your nursery is not yet using play therapy, there are two main options:

I ) Contact your nearest PTUK registrant to see if one is available to see your children: www.playtherapyregister.org.uk

3) Invest in training one of your staff as a Registered Practitioner in Therapeutic Play Skills.  You will then have a value added service to increase your revenue.

Maybe the first step is to experience how play therapy works and how we train, by attending a one-day ‘Introduction to Play Therapy’ course held at 13 convenient venues throughout the UK. Phone: 01825 761143 to book.

The children get really involved with the characters and this generates a very strong interest within them to learn the tables, meaning they go off to their next school with a great head start.

Please look at our website www.timestableplates.co.uk  and email or telephone us to ask questions, or seek a sample.

With best regards

The noticeboard might just be the hub of your school

A school noticeboard is usually bought for one reason. But that is not all a noticeboard is good for.

A school noticeboard is usually bought to communicate messages to parents where previous methods of communication have been problematic, or failed. But that is not all a noticeboard is good for. Indeed, the noticeboard might just be the hub of your school.

It provides parents with a topic of conversation and school staff with what can loosely be described as a teamwork activity – something which became apparent to Greenbarnes following the analysis of the results of a questionnaire distributed to schools.

To summarise, a school notice board is not just the responsibility of one, but the responsibility of many, and it not only creates a sense of cohesion among staff, but also among parents.

We have a range of styles of outdoor noticeboards which you can see on our website. Alternatively, please do call us on 01280 701093 and we’ll be pleased to discuss our boards, send you a brochure, and give any advice and guidance that you may require.

What do a high proportion of parents of nursery school children worry about on a daily basis?

Most parents would much prefer to be half an hour early rather than risk being fined for being late picking up their child/ren. Thus it might be that a crowd of parents regularly populate the nursery’s entrance long before the day ends.

Clearly this is a scenario which can be used to your advantage, for what do people do when they are waiting around? They read, everything and anything they can find – signs, posters, Ts & Cs….

Therefore, placing a noticeboard outside the nursery could be a very good investment, for there is no doubt that the notices will be read – making it perhaps the most effective nursery-parent communication system.

If you are thinking about buying a noticeboard to put at the entrance of the nursery, Greenbarnes provides a range of styles which you can see on The Noticeboard Shop.

What do nursery schools do in Leavers’ Week?

!cid_d095a47c046cd5a4f92373c31de551d5

In June 2016 the website Preparing for Leavers’ Week asked nursery schools, primary schools and secondary schools around the UK if they became engaged in any Leavers’ Week activities.  And if so, what they did, who took charge, and when they planned it.

All the answers are now in, and those of us conducting the research were really quite surprised by the responses.

Our biggest surprise came from the level of enthusiasm for Leavers’ Week activities in nurseries – it seems to us that this was far, far greater in nursery schools and nursery units than in primary schools.

We were also taken aback by the high level of responses which came in both from nursery schools and nursery units attached to primary schools.

98% of the nursery schools and units said that they did indeed engage in Leavers’ Week activities and gave us a lot of detail as to what they did.

Our questions also involved issues of who took charge of the arrangements and when they started making arrangements.

You can read our full report on Leavers’ Week in Nursery Schools on the “Preparing for Leavers’ Week” website, which also carries our results from surveys of primary and secondary schools.

I do hope you find the information useful. My colleagues and I will be in touch again next term as we develop the site further.  It is, I think, the first time anyone has ever gathered together information on Leavers’ Week from schools around the UK.
