Why play therapy support of your pupils is not an option

If your school aims to provide a complete well-being service for all your pupils, and support for your parents a play therapy service is essential – not just an option.

It’s estimated that 20% of all UK children suffer from some type of social, emotional, behaviour or other mental health problem.  The earlier they get help the better.  But it must be safe and effective – not by unqualified, unregistered, unsupervised persons.  Play therapy has a success record of between 77% and 84% when therapy is delivered to Play Therapy UK standards.

Your school will also benefit by:

  • Pupils more able to learn
  • Reduced staff stress
  • Happier parents

If you are not already using a therapist on the Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists there’s two main ways:

You can find out a lot more about the skills required and the experiential methods of training that we use by attending a one day introduction to play therapy course (13 venues in the UK): http://www.playtherapy.org.uk/Training/TrainCrseAPACIntrod1day

A School Child Physical and Mental Health Policy Document is now available free of charge

According to the government’s own Childhood Obesity Report, nearly a third of children aged 2 to 15 are overweight or obese.  What’s more, with each passing year more children are becoming obese at earlier ages and staying obese for longer.

Schools are of course not responsible for the complete physical and mental well-being of the children taught in the school.  But recent publications issued by the government suggest that officials now see schools as being in a unique position not only to enhance the intellectual and physical condition of children, but also to help take the message of the dangers of obesity to parents.

As a result, although inspectors are not yet looking to schools to have a child physical and mental health policy in place, they most certainly can be impressed when they find that there is one.

Which is why we thought we would produce just such a document and offer it for free – and with the option that it can readily be adjusted to meet your own local situation.

Our position in evolving this policy stems from the fact that the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges stated in 2017 that “Physical activity is a ‘miracle cure’.”   This is based on the argument that extra activity is able to treat, prevent, and manage up to twenty different lifestyle conditions such as many cancers, diabetes, and heart disease as well as support mental health and wellbeing and prevent of the onset of dementia.

The “School Child Physical and Mental Health Policy Document” is available to all schools free of charge.

The policy comes in the form of a Word document, thus allowing you to amend any parts of it that you wish to meet your particular situation and conditions.

If you would like, without any obligation, a free copy of the policy document please simply email Active@schools.co.uk and write “Free Health Policy Document” in the subject line, and it will be emailed back to you.

If you have any questions about this Policy Document, please do email me on enquiries@imoves.com

3D clay printers are so light and easy to set up they can easily be shared among schools

There are many benefits to using 3D clay printers as opposed to 3D printers that utilise plastics or other materials.  And key to better and wider use is that the machines are portable.

This means that once you have a 3D clay printer you can easily share it with other schools in your cluster – thus making the technology readily affordable across several schools, while allowing a large number of students to experience 3D printing for themselves.

What’s more, setting up the 3D clay printer is simplicity itself, and once set up one has a printer that produces its items within the time constraints of a standard lesson – and without any of the environmental impact that (for example) plastic 3D printing brings.

And just in case that were not enough, a clay printer produces products that parents will be pleased to have in the house – and indeed pleased to pay for, if sold at the school fete.

Now I appreciate that having 3D clay printers in schools is a new idea and we need to prove their worth, and that is why we are willing to let you have a 3D clay printer in your school for free, without obligation, for six weeks.

The 3D clay printer is, of course, delivered free of charge, provided with full training to the relevant member of staff, and naturally removed at the end.  Example 3D computer-models are provided to begin with, and our Vase Creator offers a simple and fast introduction to model design.

In terms of technical details, the 3D clay printer has a footprint of 550 x 350mm and a total height with the cartridge loaded of 1235mm.  As for installation, there are no special requirements – just two plug sockets.  And we deliver by hand at a time convenient to you.

If you are interested in taking a 3D clay printer for six weeks for free in your school in the spring term 2018, please do call us on 01926 865109 or email mike@claybot.co.uk

If you would like to see what the machine can do, there is a series of videos of the machine in operation on our website.  You can also find technical details etc at www.claybot.co.uk

The simple and effective way to help students succeed in their maths lessons and exams……..

Sometimes, however many times we  remind  students  to bring the right equipment to lessons and exams, there tends to be a few who have either forgotten they’ve got a maths lesson or exam  or have remembered,  but  arrive without a pen, ruler, pencil, compass  etc.

It’s now possible to obtain a “ready made” solution to this problem …

The  “Value Maths Set”  contains a metal compass and half pencil, two quality black ink ballpens,  HB pencil, 15 cm ruler,  180 degree protractor, eraser and  sharpener.  All packed in a convenient “exam friendly,”   clear pvc zip up wallet. Reassuringly good value and an instant solution to the problem of students turning up for lessons and exams without the correct kit.

Only   £ 1.25  (160+)    £ 1.29  (80+)     £ 1.32  (1-79)      ex vat

The Value Maths Set is ideal to give out just before  lessons or exams  to ensure that every student has got what they need.  It’s  a simple and cost effective solution to the problems caused by students turning up without the right equipment.

Why the “Deck Ahoy Primary Mathematics Activities and Games” book comes with a serious argument warning.

Parent: What did you do in school today?

Child: We played cards.  It was good.

Parent: In the lesson?  You played cards in the lesson?

Child: Yup. What’s for tea?

Parent: Put that phone away.

Child: Why?

Parent: Well if you’ve been playing all day you’ll have to do some work now.

Child: That’s so unfair.

Fortunately the above scenario has only been reported to us in one case following a lesson using our “Deck Ahoy Primary Mathematics Activities and Games” book.

But in these days of multiple legal claims against publishers for providing highly effective materials for use in the classroom which then cause an argument at home, we are now obliged to point out the dangers of such materials.

“Deck Ahoy” can result in a significant upturn in the speed at which KS1 and KS2 children come to understand addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, statistics, time, ratios, squares, and cubes and graphs.

But it can also be responsible for some distressing scenes at home involving an estimated one child in every 18,352* that experiences the lesson.

You can read more about Deck Ahoy on our website and see a whole range of sample materials from the book.

*This is an estimate** and may not be true.

“What is the single greatest asset that a teenager can have?” A free report.

There was a time when looking neat and tidy was considered to be of prime importance for any teenager when going to a job, college, or university interview.

Later there was a period when being able to offer coherent answers to standard interview questions such as, “Why do you want this job?” was thought to be particularly helpful.

And yes, there is still something to be said for both points of view.  But it is also true that in recent years many of those who are interviewing candidates for jobs, and those looking to offer places in further and higher education, have changed their stance.

Now there is a much greater tendency than ever before for interviewers to consider applicants in terms of much deeper and more fundamental personality traits.

It is true that many application forms and interviews invite the applicant to say something about him/herself.  Others give this more depth by providing a touch of context as in, “How do you think you’d get on working in a team?”

But in a very real sense that is a trick question.  A trick because it invites the answer, “I think I am very much a team player; I listen to others and I’m able to contribute when appropriate.”

Such an answer sounds absolutely right – which is why applicants give it – yet increasingly it is exactly the answer that causes employers and admissions tutors to reject an applicant.

For increasingly they are NOT looking for a generalised belief that one is a team player, but rather for people who already know what they would bring to a team situation.

This transition in requirement is catching many applicants out, and for this reason Belbin has produced a new, free, report for tutors of school leavers, which deals with the issue of Team Roles – the topic that has become of prime importance to many who consider applications from school leavers.

If you would like a free copy of this report please email lisa@belbin.com and write “A teenager’s greatest asset report” in the subject line and we will send it back to you at once.  There is no charge, and absolutely no obligation, and I’ll be happy to hear from you with any questions you may have.

What is the easiest way to raise the grades and achievement of every pupil in the school?

The answer to this question was provided last school year by the government.  And it is rather curious, because I suspect that until most of us saw the evidence we wouldn’t have guessed.

It appears from a whole raft of medical evidence that 30 minutes a day of additional physical activity not only cuts down the chances of obesity but also results in dramatic improvements in behaviour and academic achievement.

As a bonus the children who engage in this will also have a lower chance of suffering from mental health issues during the rest of their school lives.

It is the sheer breadth of the benefits that pupils accrue through such activities that has prompted imoves to develop a series of over 1000 curriculum-based active lessons and activities which meet the requirements of this new initiative.

All of these can be undertaken within normal lessons within the regular classroom or, if you prefer, in a hall or outdoors.

So convinced are we of the benefits of the programme that we have decided to offer you a chance to use the programme free of charge.  In short you and your colleagues can take any five lessons without any cost or commitment by the school.

What’s more, these lessons are each complete in themselves, with interactive movies, supporting lesson plans, flashcards, music, and assessments, making the whole process easy to plan, teach, and evaluate.

In effect it means that the complete requirement of 30 minutes a day additional physical activity can now be met by the school using these resources, integrating them easily into the normal teaching timetable.

And the improvement in grades and achievement comes as a bonus.

You can read more about imoves’ active lessons and choose the lessons that you wish to try out, from literacy to science, from PSHE to PE, on our website.

You can, of course, sign up to the free use of the resources straightaway, but if you have any questions please do email enquiries@imoves.com or phone us on 0114 2661061.

Want to better support your boys?

Have you considered accredited mentoring?

How to effectively engage young males with education and provide them with the support and encouragement they need to go on to bigger and better things is always a concern for staff.

Mentoring, as well as offering an evidence-based approach to work with young men, helps young men to achieve their academic and vocational potential, addresses concerns related to problematic behaviours – and provides go-to support and signposting to other services from someone they have built trust with.

The Unit Award in Mentoring Boys and Young Men is a Level 2 award providing your staff/students with an understanding of mentoring work. Whether it is for your staff to better engage with boys or for the boys themselves to support one another, mentoring is an approach that has been shown to work.

The workshop covering the award criteria is 4 hours long. Each staff/student undertaking the award will be provided with their own copy of the Mengage course book: Mentoring Male: A guide to mentoring work with boys and young men. A Level 2 certificate will be issued upon completion.

The workshop costs £1295 for up to 10 staff or up to 15 students or a one-off date on Thursday 12th October CLICK HERE.

For more information or to discuss a booking, you can contact Liam by email at liam@mengage.co.uk or by phone on 07788725318.

Alternatively, you can visit our website at www.mengage.co.uk to see what else we offer with regards to mental health and raising boys’ achievement.

When should your school lease a minibus, and why?

When to lease: If you don’t have the large upfront costs of a minibus already in place, and can’t raise them anytime soon.

Why lease? It is quicker and easier to raise the monthly fee of a lease each month (or to cover a few months) than it is to raise the entire cost of a minibus in a short space of time.

Furthermore, when we consider the rate at which a vehicle depreciates, by the time any loan has been paid off the vehicle may no longer be considered a much of an asset. Thus, it could also be argued that leasing is more cost effective in the long run as you are paying to use the vehicle rather than own it.

When to lease: If you can’t raise enough money for the vehicle’s annual MOTs, services and repairs, and/or if you don’t have a member of staff who has time to organise the vehicle’s annual MOTs, services and repairs.

Why lease? Many leasing companies, such as Benchmark Leasing, can include the cost of the vehicle’s MOTs, services and some repairs* in the lease price, so there will be very little or no further costs to pay on top of the monthly lease fee. Additionally, Benchmark Leasing will help organise the minibus’s MOTs, services and repairs for you, so your staff can focus their attention on what they were employed to do: teach.

For more information about leasing a minibus with Benchmark Leasing, simply visit http://www.minibusleasing.co.uk/schools-minibus.php. Alternatively, you can call us on 01753 859944 or email us at minibus@benchmarkleasing.co.uk.

Access 3,800 education quizzes for free for a whole year

“It is a fun way of reinforcing all the great work being done by teachers every day in the classroom.”

– Chris Packham, TV presenter, author and education advocate.

“Now, we all know that keeping learning fun and informative is the key to gaining and keeping pupils’ interest and concentration, which is why I have become a massive fan of the website, Education Quizzes.”

This is what TV presenter, author, and education advocate, Chris Packham, said when he was asked what he thought about Education Quizzes. But that is not all…

“You see, they are written by teachers who understand the sticking points that pupils have when they are trying to understand a complex subject.

“And reassuringly, the online quizzes follow the national curriculum that is taught in school.

“So what makes them so different? Well these quizzes are like the building blocks of learning. They break down subjects into bitesize chunks, and in doing this, they declutter some of these complex topics into easy to understand questions and answers.

“As your pupils progress through the questions, the quiz will provide your pupils with an explanation as to why they got a questions wrong, and just as importantly, why they got a question right.

“Education Quizzes is different in that it wants you to enforce the theory behind the learning. It wants to make sure that pupils really understand the building blocks of that particular subject. And as your pupils’ understanding grows, the quizzes get harder.

“Furthermore, the performance reports will reassure you that your pupils are comfortable in their understanding of that level and ready to progress to the next stage.

“And do you know what I really like about it? Is that it is a fun way of reinforcing all the great work being done by teachers every day in the classroom.”

To sign your school up to Education Quizzes for free for a whole year and to access the 3,800 (and growing) quizzes on the Education Quizzes website, simply visit www.educationquizzes.com/schools-uk-registrations/. Get your students to take action to protect children caught up in conflicts

Free Teaching Resources

Is ‘disability’ a word your students associate with the war in Syria? Much has been written about the conflict but few people realise it is one of the most disabling wars in history. Over two million people have been injured and one in five Syrian refugees now has a disability. War has changed and towns and cities are now battlefields; hospitals and schools are regularly bombed. This term your students can learn more, get involved and speak up to protect innocent civilians.

Your students can take action and develop their citizenship skills by exploring the impact of conflict on Syrian children as part of Handicap International’s Forgotten 10 Challenge – 10 days of action from 1st to 10th December.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain an insight into what it is like for injured and disabled people caught up in conflict and to take citizenship action by using our teaching resources as a stimulus for learning and raising awareness amongst their peers. Students can also support our campaign to protect civilians from explosive weapons and fundraise to help clear unexploded weapons and provide rehabilitation care to injured and disabled victims of conflict.

To order your free Action Pack, visit:

www.handicap-international.org.uk/forgotten10

The Action Pack includes details of a range of free teaching resources to order including Syria’s Young Survivors interactive posters, PowerPoints and films, along with ideas for assemblies, classroom activities and whole school events.

If you would like to find out more about how your school could get involved, please email john.mcgeachy@hi-uk.org or call me on 0870 774 3737.

I’m looking forward to working with you this term and having a big impact!

Why should a school encourage parents to become involved in the Active School initiative?

It is clear that as part of the government’s Active Schools initiative there is the implication that schools should help encourage parents to make their children more active.

Certainly there’s no doubt that if parents can be convinced of the benefit of additional activity for their children, that can have an enormous benefit for the school.

At the heart of the evidence surrounding the Active School initiative is the fact that additional activity not only makes the children physically fitter, but it also dramatically improves children’s intellectual abilities while reducing disciplinary issues, improving sociability, and reducing mental health problems.

In short, active children are easier to work with in school, cause fewer problems, and get better academic results.

Given that set of facts which are clearly laid out in reports from the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges and others, if one can persuade parents to get their children to be more active, this can be the single simplest step towards increasing attainment in schools.

imoves works with schools in delivering activity sessions that can take place within lessons, and as part of our work we have produced a short document that explains to parents the benefits of activity and encourages them to be involved.

The document can be placed on your school’s website or forwarded to parents by email or in printed form, and is available from imoves free of charge and, of course, without any obligation.

What’s more, because it comes as a Word file you can, if you wish, amend it so that it relates directly to issues in your school and of course translate it into other languages.

For your free copy of “We’re becoming a more active school: how your child can benefit” simply email Active@schools.co.uk and write “We’re becoming a more active school” in the subject line.  We’ll send it back to you straight away.

Assessing Primary Languages by interpreting the requirements of the KS2 Programmes of Study

The most effective way of ensuring progress in Foreign Languages among your KS2 pupils is by breaking the Programmes of Study into achievable, understandable objectives, creating a unified tracking approach which can then be used by any KS2 teacher to plan their lessons.

How do you translate the vague curriculum requirements such as ‘speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures’ into a four year scheme of work?

And then, how do you record progress when the national curriculum does not provide much guidance?

It is with these questions in mind that we have developed Assessing Primary Languages – a resource that supports both specialist and non-specialist teachers of primary languages in interpreting the requirements of the KS2 Programme of Study and measuring pupils’ progress.

Classroom teachers and subject leaders will find this resource invaluable, not least because the tried and tested framework is a rigorous tool which can be used for planning, but also because teachers are given help with deciding what ʻsubstantial progressʼ actually looks like.

The framework is clearly laid out and breaks the Programme of Study into smaller areas which are then cross-referenced across four stages, so the task of assessing all aspects of the Programme of Study has never been easier.

Assessing Primary Languages also contains a large number of creative and adaptable ready-to-use activities, including those which can be used to support you in measuring your pupils’ progress for each area and at each stage.

Can you really get a ‘bespoke’ Primary School assessment system for less than many off-the-shelf systems?

Yes you can! – with support from our Primary Progress toolkit.

Our system is flexible enough to allow schools to create their own assessment policy, and MAT managements to compare their schools’ progress and attainment.

Schools can:

pick their own subjects and curriculum statements/objectives (the toolkit can import these or provide a default set to edit).

agree their own assessment grades, which define pupils’ steps towards mastering the curriculum: we have schools who use 3 steps (e.g. emerging, expected, exceeding) 4 or 5 steps (e.g. below, towards, at expected, at greater depth), even 9 and 12 point numeric scales.

use a quick and easy way for teachers to record their assessments (the toolkit provides this).

set Age Related Expectations or Targets for each term/year (the toolkit has a simple way to set these).

analyse which pupils are making expected progress and which need support to get them on track (the toolkit provides multiple reports e.g statements achieved, subject attainment, combined subjects, ARE, individual pupil, whole school overview of attainment and progress, EYFS)

The MAT can get:

a dashboard giving access to all the individual school toolkits, together with overview reports which summarise results at MAT level and compare schools’ performance.

So, if you aren´t 100% satisfied with your current assessment tracking system, or if you have set up a system in Excel and are finding it time-consuming to maintain, why not check out our Online Primary Progress toolkit at primaryprogresstoolkit.co.uk?

If you need more information, or would like to discuss your specific needs, please email me at statsed@gmail.com.

We can give you free access to a demo site, where you can try out the toolkit for yourself.

In the battle between the paper book and the ebook, the physical book is now winning, hands down.

They were not the figures that anyone was expecting, but the fall in the readership of ebooks first noticed two years ago has continued.  Meanwhile sales of paper books are growing.

And better still, this growth in paper book sales is not being driven by the older generation holding onto the way things used to be.  Rather it is the youngsters who are feeding a growth in the purchase of books in print.

Overall last year sales of physical books in bookshops (the best measure we have of the readership of paperbacks and hardbacks) went up by 7% while ebook sales went down by 4% for the second year running.

Which in turn means that any previous notion we had of student resistance to physical books is most certainly now in retreat.

And what we can add is that classics, such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and A Christmas Carol, are still being read in huge numbers.  And with brand new editions of works such as these now being available at just £1.87 each after discount with free delivery, the ebook’s appeal has declined.

To help ensure the continued dominance of the paper book we have over 400 titles in print, including over 230 works of classic literature.  Each volume contains the full text, and with the classics there is also a set of exclusive introductions and notes.

Additionally not only do we have individual titles at £1.87 but we also have the World Literature and Poetry series at just £3.99 before discount, and our complete works series for just £7.99 each.

If you would like to see a list of around 50 of the most frequently used set texts which are available direct to schools at the special price of £1.87 that is available here.

To see the full list of our titles in print along with a ready to use order form, should you need it, we have a page with those details as well.  Plus there is currently a 25% discount on all the prices shown.

But even that is not all, for we also have an offer of a free book.  Just in case the notion of books at £1.87 each with free delivery seems just too good to be true, we’d like to assure you of the quality of our publications.

So, if you would like a free sample of one of our classics, just email education@wordsworth-editions.com with your name and the school address, and we’ll put it in the post to you, with our compliments.

We look forward to hearing from you.

How play can be used to reduce disruptive behaviour

Play is complex and ambiguous.  There are many ways of classifying and analysing it.  One approach defines seven types.  It’s generally agreed that play is essential for normal child development.  It may also used in conjunction with the creative arts to heal damaged minds.

An approach has been developed in the UK, over the last fifteen years, to minimise the disruption caused by pupils who have behaviour problems and for others whose learning is undermined by emotional problems.  The Integrative Holistic model of Play Therapy now has a clinical evidence base of over 12,000 cases showing its effectiveness.  It is being used in 45 countries and over 1500 primary schools in the UK.

When therapy is delivered to the standards of Play Therapy UK, between 77% and 84% of the children show a positive change as observed by teachers and parents.

Training for SENCOs, Teachers and Teaching Assistants is available at 13 conveniently located venues in the UK.  Post Graduate awards by Leeds Beckett University.   Admission to the Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists,  accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, an independent UK government funded agency.  www.playtherapyregister.org.uk

Post Graduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills – 15 days spread over 5 three day weekends to minimise time away from school.

One day Introduction to Play Therapy course – find out more about the model, if it’s suitable for your school and our innovative training methods.

How would you like free maths kit when you order scientific calculators…..?

For 22 years I was a secondary school teacher working in inner London…….. and during this time one of the most frustrating aspects of my job was students who turned up for lessons without the right kit.

Sometimes it could simply be a pen they’d forgotten or, on one occasion (when I was working in a south London school)  five minutes before the start of the GCSE maths exam, one of the candidates asked me if he could borrow a calculator !

So where does the free maths kit come into all this ….?

There’s a product called the “Value Maths set”  which contains the basic equipment needed for most maths lessons …. it’s not only reasonably priced but can be a big help for both students and teachers in avoiding the disruption which may be caused when some students turn up for their lessons without the right kit.

From just £ 1.25 each, (ex vat) it contains a metal compass with half pencil, two good quality black ink pens, eraser, sharpener, 15 cm ruler, protractor, and a full length HB pencil…. All packed in a handy “exam friendly” clear PVC wallet with a zip slider.

For a limited period it’s possible to get free stocks of this product …see the website of

Beat the Price Increases on Interactive Touchscreens

There comes a time with all technology when more modern equipment supersedes it. Years ago we used blackboards with chalk. Several generations later we were using Interactive whiteboards (IWB) with projectors. Believe it or not these have been in circulation in schools for around twenty years.  However time moves on and schools are now moving over to Interactive Touchscreens (ITS). These have all the benefits of IWBs plus many more:

  • Use up to 75% less power
  • Crystal clear viewing in any light conditions

If your school can’t quite afford to lease a brand-new minibus, has it considered leasing half?

Despite the recent huge growth in interest in learning outside the classroom, schools are limited as to how much Learning Outside the Classroom they can offer, not least because, as 60% of subject leaders reported, booking the school minibus can be somewhat of a challenge.

And in the current economic climate acquiring an additional minibus (even on a lease) is no longer a financially viable option for many schools, which is why some have opted to lease half a minibus – thus increasing their opportunity for LOtC.

Indeed the notion of leasing half a minibus might sound strange but it simply means sharing a minibus with a neighbouring school in the same cluster, trust or council, and thus reducing the costs associated with leasing an additional minibus by 50%.

If you are interested in learning more about leasing half a minibus and how it could work for your school, please do call 01753 859944 and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction. Alternatively, you can email minibus@benchmarkleasing.co.uk.

And if you would like to have a look at the type of minibuses that we regularly lease to schools before getting in contact, please visit www.minibusleasing.co.uk/school-minibus.php.

What are the two key factors most likely to enhance students’ A and AS level biology results?

Interestingly, the key factors that enhance student progress at A and AS level biology are by and large quite widely known and accepted by most teachers.

The problem has always been (at least until now) getting students to implement them.

The first factor, of course, involves stopping students simply “reading through” textbook materials and instead persuading them to move over to active learning in which they handle and manipulate information as they progress.

The second factor involves having a system through which students can rapidly find information on related concepts and issues, so that they neither make false assumptions nor fail to see how information across different topics fits together.

Because of the importance of these two issues, they were naturally at the centre of our thinking as my colleagues and I came to the task of devising a new set of materials for A and AS Level Biology.

As a result BIOZONE produced not a text book in the traditional sense, but an interactive workbook which forces the students to make their learning active, thus enhancing thinking and embedding the learning into the student’s long term memory.

At the same time we devised a unique tab system which identifies relevant online resources and connections to related concepts across the entire specification.  In short the learning more rapidly becomes part of a meaningful, unified approach, rather than a set of different topics.

To show how this works in practice I would be delighted to supply you with sample downloads completely free of charge.

Simply click here for these free resources.

Alternatively if you have any questions please do call 01283 530366 or email sales@biozone.co.uk.

These two scientific calculators could be all your students need for the new school year …

The LOGIK brand of calculators has been used  successfully in primary and secondary schools during the past fifteen years.  If you’re considering  scientific calculators for the new school year then their two “flagship” models, the LK 183 and the LK 83XP are well worth considering.

Both calculators have a THREE year warranty (excludes damage to LCD) and are suitable for KS 3, 4 and GCSE.  Both calcs come with  hard plastic keys, a slide-on case and all the features and functions your students will need for  GCSE maths.   From only £ 3.69  each (ex vat) both calcs are also available in class sets of 30 in a Gratnells storage box with a foam insert and handy clip on lid.

Helping those who are slipping behind, in the most dramatic of ways.

There is one time of the year during which everyone expects something new: September.  Students have obviously advanced a year, there may perhaps be some new members of staff, there are newcomers in the school just starting their secondary schooling.

Such a moment can be the perfect time to suggest a change.   Especially if the change involves the introduction of a new process to aid those students whose literacy attainments were particularly below average in the previous year.

Indeed, if these students then make a great leap forwards in literacy, that change will have a dramatic impact on not just the students and their parents but also on the whole school. Word spreads that your school really can and will make a difference in terms of literacy.

The approach that can achieve such a dramatic turnaround from the beginning of the academic year uses one-to-one tuition for selected pupils and students – but without the costs normally associated with these sorts of initiatives.

Of course, these are bold claims and you will want to see this validated.  This is why we offer a free trial of our approach. If you arrange a trial now, we can ensure this happens in the first half of the coming term.

Through our program, every literacy misunderstanding and every concept not fully grasped is instantly spotted, resulting in the student being taken back a step for remedial work. After this, progress and advancement resumes.

Each individual’s literacy needs are thus analysed and each student is directed to an engaging set of activities which remedy any deficits before advancing through to the next set of skills.

Because the level of instruction is so accurately reflective of the child’s current abilities, the student then gets a feeling of success and progress which of itself is highly motivational.

To enable you to see this process in action before making any firm decisions, there is more information about Lexia Strategies® and the extraordinary results that other schools have seen here.

You can also read a variety of case studies here. You will find on the top right of the page the link to gain full access to the program for 30 days without any payment or commitment.

If you want to know more about the program, please do call 0191 482 1939 or email info@lexiauk.co.uk

How many books by Danish authors in your school library?

Yes, you probably have some fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen there, but can you even name another Danish author? Astrid Lindgren, you cry, but no, she was actually Swedish.

Your students are probably surprisingly knowledgeable about Danish literature, even so. While many have enjoyed the recent films about Thor and Loki, few realise these Super Heroes are ancient Gods from the Nordic myths and legends.

To motivate them to find out more, there’s a new Danish classic on offer called Erik and the Gods; Journey to Valhalla by the distinguished Dane Lars-Henrik Olsen. (He also set up the Panda Club for the World Wildlife Fund but that’s another story…)

Aimed at lovers of adventure stories such as ‘Beast Quest’ this rollicking tale of a13 year old battling Giants and Monsters, has been translated into English for the first time. It’s considered the Danish equivalent to ‘Lord of the Rings’ and has won awards in Denmark and the UK. And yes, there’s going to be a film…

If you would like to read a copy – or book the author to give a talk at your school in October – there is an immediate opportunity. Or if you’d like to know more about our other YA fiction titles in translation,  please do call 0203 261 0000 or email cheryl@aurorametro.com or simply visit our website today: www.aurorametro.com.

What is the simplest way to ensure that you meet the new 30 minutes a day physical activity directive?

Like so many government directives, the new “30 minutes a day additional physical activity”, which is prescribed for all pupils from this term onwards, comes with a multitude of benefits but little guidance as to how such a programme may be fitted into the average school day.

Certainly on the benefits side there can be little argument, for report after report has shown that children in engaging in this sort of activity are less likely to become obese. Furthermore they will show an improvement in behaviour and academic achievement and will have a lower chance of suffering from mental health issues.

Indeed it is the sheer breadth of the benefits available to schools and pupils that has prompted imoves to develop a series of over 1000 curriculum-based active lessons and activities which meet the requirements of this new initiative.

So convinced are we of the benefits of the programme that we have decided to offer you a chance to use the programme free of charge.  With this option you and your colleagues can take any five lessons without any cost or commitment by the school.

What’s more, these lessons are each complete in themselves, with interactive movies, supporting lesson plans, flashcards, music and assessments, making the whole process easy to plan, teach, and evaluate.

In effect it means that the complete requirement of 30 minutes a day additional physical activity can now be met by the school using these resources, integrating them easily into the normal teaching timetable.

All the activities can take place in the normal classroom, hall, or outdoors, and, as the government reports clearly say, the results (in terms of improved learning, focus, and behaviour) will be witnessed very quickly indeed.

You can read more about the imoves active lessons and choose any five that you wish to try out, from literacy to science, from PSHE to PE, on our website.

You can, of course, sign up straightaway, but if you have any questions please do email enquiries@imoves.com or phone us on 0114 2661061.

What is the single most important issue when buying hoodies for school leavers?

Of course, when a hoodie, a tee-shirt, or anything else is chosen as part of the official leaving clothing for those now departing the school, the look of the items will be what attracts the students first of all.

But hidden behind this is a second factor, and one that turns out to be much more important.

Because it turns out that some items of leavers’ clothing are made on the basis that they are only going to be worn once or twice.  After that, it is argued, it doesn’t matter if the clothing deteriorates, because the leaver won’t be wearing it any more.

Thus the quality of the clothing can be cut.  But although such an approach does cut costs, it can also seriously damage the school’s reputation.  For it turns out that many leavers keep their leavers’ clothing as a memento.  And if they see it rapidly deteriorating that can affect their view of the school they have just left far more than one might imagine.

As we all know, negative comments spread like wildfire on social media, and therefore what should have been a positive statement about the old school now becomes a totally negative statement about the shoddiness of the clothing provided for the leavers.

Which is why there is one company, LeaversGear, which specialises in quality, not just for leavers but for all school apparel, be it for school trips, outdoor activities, or sports teams.

To take our hoodies as an example, we offer a slightly heavier weight at 310gsm against the cheaper standard 280 gsm, with double fabric hood and self colour chunky flat cords.  They have a kangaroo pouch pocket with concealed ipad and phone pocket, ribbed cuff and hem and twin needle stitching detail.

What’s more, not only is our quality exceptional, we are very competitively priced as well.

And there’s no need to guess at sizes; we will send you samples at no cost.  We just ask you to return the samples when you’ve finished with them.

How can disruptive behaviour be reduced?

A new approach has been developed in the UK to minimise the disruption caused by pupils who have behaviour problems and for others whose learning is undermined by emotional problems.  The solution is the Integrative Holistic model of Play Therapy.  This now has a clinical evidence base of over 12,000 cases showing its effectiveness.

‘No More Boys and Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free?’ – BBC documentary series

Following the launch of the BBC documentary series, ‘No More Boys and Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free?’, now is a better time than any to ensure that the message of gender equality is spread as far and wide as possible – not least because we are now fully equipped with the scientific backing that is required to persuade any sceptics.

For those of you who haven’t already watched it (highly recommended), the documentary series explores how gender stereotypes are affecting boys and girls alike, despite both genders being equally proficient, mentally and emotionally, as well as physically up until puberty.

A highly effective way of conveying this message to your pupils is in morning assemblies, which is why Brilliant Publications is giving away one of the 50 assembly stories from the popular Modern Christian Assembly Stories volume to whomever is interested.

This particular assembly story is entitled Comfort’s story: showing boys and girls they are equals, and challenges gender stereotypes, using football as the example.

Alongside the assembly story we have also provided some teacher notes which include links to PSMC and propose a range of questions that you can ask your pupils to get them involved. There is also a short explanation as to what the Christian view is on the topic, as well as a prayer that you can incorporate into the assembly, if you choose.

Click here for the FREE assembly story and accompanying teacher notes

How can an individual student most readily reach his/her full potential?

There is a conundrum here: how does any of us know what our full potential is?  How do we know which subject will be the one that will allow us to shine?  How do we know which job we would enjoy the most; which profession we would be the most successful in?

Furthermore, the world of work is increasingly focussed on teams of people working together.  As a result employers are not looking for hard-working all-rounders, but for people who can bring something particular to the team.

They want the brilliantly creative (but annoyingly forgetful) person, working alongside one who methodically evaluates all the options and then makes rapid judgements.  The specialist inevitably overloading everyone with too much information working alongside the implementer who picks the key points, plans the strategy, and makes it happen.

Thus employers do indeed need perfectionists who will painstakingly work through the matter at hand to weed out the errors.  But they also need the free thinkers who can suddenly come up with previously unimagined solutions to problems within the company.

As a result the people who get the exciting jobs are the ones who can identify themselves correctly within the multiplicity of roles that organisations now have.  The old days of being able to write a catch all CV which focuses on exam results and says, “I’m hard working, a team player, reliable and practical, but also creative…”  are long gone

GetSet from Belbin is a questionnaire-based approach to helping students find out about their own strengths and talents.

To help you see the value that can be gained from completing the survey, we are very happy to offer you the chance to take the GetSet questionnaire yourself at no cost or obligation.

Then, if you feel it would be helpful to your students you can arrange for the questionnaire to be made available to those students whom you nominate.

If a school ordered 600 of a new scientific calculator in June 2016 and then another 600 of the same model in March 2017, what would your conclusions be?

It’s probably safe to assume that the school was satisfied with the new calculator and that it met the criteria of their maths department as well as being suitable for use at KS 3, 4 and in GCSE exams.

…and the calculator in question? It’s the Logik LK 83XP, featuring “natural display” format, dual power (battery & solar) prime factorisation, stats calculations, random numbers, trig functions, algebraic logic, hyperbolics, and a host of other features which make it a sensible choice for KS 3, KS 4 and GCSE maths. Standard and Higher Grade, Junior & Leaving Certificate

The LK 83XP has auto shut off (to preserve battery life), hard plastic keys & a slide-on case for durability plus a THREE year guarantee. It’s an excellent alternative to the brand leader and at a time when school budgets are under pressure its cost is reassuringly modest…from only £ 5.29 each ex vat. Standard and Higher Grade, Junior & Leaving Certificate

Can you really get a ‘bespoke’ Primary School assessment system for less than many off-the-shelf systems?

With support from our Primary Progress toolkit, yes you can.

Our system is flexible enough to allow schools to manage their own assessment policy, and MAT management to compare their schools’ progress and attainment.

Schools can:

  • pick their own subjects, statements/objectives (the toolkit can import these or provide a default set to edit).
  • agree a set of assessment grades, which define pupils’ steps towards mastering the curriculum (the toolkit can cope with any set of assessment grades).
  • use a quick and easy way for teachers to record their assessments (the toolkit provides this).
  • set Age Related Expectations for each term (the toolkit has a simple way to set these).
  • analyse which pupils are making expected progress and which need support to get them on track (the toolkit provides multiple reports)

The MAT can get:

  • a dashboard giving access to all the individual school toolkits, together with overview reports which summarise results at MAT level and compare schools performance.

So, if you aren´t 100% satisfied with your current assessment tracking system, why not check out our Online Primary Progress toolkit at primaryprogresstoolkit.co.uk?

If you need more information, or would like to discuss your specific needs, email me at statsed@gmail.com.

We can give you free access to a demo site, where you can try out the toolkit for yourself.

What are extra effective ways of helping your students achieve their university ambitions?

Now that the A Level and GCSE results are known, many of your students will be seeking your help with the new term’s subject choices or changes to their university ambitions. Education Advisers Ltd can offer services to supplement your help to such students and their parents. For example :

  1. We have produced an online library of university advice sources , which is available free of charge to schools to paste onto their own school extranets or intranets – simply ask us for details
  2. We have detailed free eguides on applying to medical school or art school
  3. For those students whose GCSE grades fell below expectations, we have alternative solutions with schools or colleges offering BTECs
  4. There has been an upsurge in interest in Foundation Programmes, which are shorter than A Levels. Although primarily aimed at International students we can sometimes place UK nationals onto such courses
  5. We can advise on alternative university courses for those whose grades necessitate a direction change
  6. We can arrange specialist private tuition at home to facilitate retakes for those needing to improve GCSE grades, while still continuing with A Levels at school.

For more information on how we can help specific individual students, go to http://www.educationadvisers.co.uk/services-for-schools-school-referrals or better still phone Mary, Duncan or Ryan on 01622 813870 or 01603 812852

Why 50% of schools are leasing their current minibus

Not surprisingly a recent minibus survey from Benchmark Leasing cited cost as the reason for many schools not acquiring a (additional) minibus. Yet only half of schools have considered leasing a minibus as a way around the problem.

Of course, the great benefit of leasing is that there are no large upfront payments so you don’t have to wait until you have raised enough funds to cover the cost of a minibus in order to acquire a (new) one – which would clearly be the case if you were looking to buy a minibus outright.

Additionally, as leasing is an arrangement which makes it possible for schools to fund the minibus through a small payment each month, there is the added benefit of improved budgeting and cash flow.

In fact, leasing a minibus can sometimes work out to be cheaper in the long run due to the rate at which vehicles devalue over time and/or with use – so it is well worth contacting a company like Benchmark Leasing to get a quote for a brand new minibus so that you can look at the figures for yourself.

Furthermore, by leasing a minibus with Benchmark Leasing, the vehicle’s MOTs, repairs* and services are included in the arrangement with the costs conveniently built into the lease price.

To enquire about leasing a brand new minibus with Benchmark Leasing, please do call on 01753 859944 or email us at minibus@benchmarkleasing.co.uk. You might also like to have a look at our website to get a feel for the type of vehicles that we regularly lease to schools.

How can the balance be best struck between supporting pupils in independent writing lessons and leaving them to it?

An exception to the theory “the more support one receives, the further they can progress” is that of lessons in independent writing. But on the contrary, and quite obviously, no support is not enough.

So how can the balance be struck to ensure that pupils are able to improve upon their independent writing skills, lesson after lesson?

In introducing the Independent Writing Activity Book series by Topical Resources to pupils in year one through to year 6, it is possible for them to make maximum progress in their independent writing lessons.

As the pupils advance through the activities they will encounter a whole range of independent writing tasks with a different level of support for each, dependent on the stage to which they have progressed.

The creative activities are highly engaging at all levels with illustrations relating to the various themes throughout.

What’s more, each activity book focuses on the particular styles of writing that pupils are required to learn at each level, set out in the English programmes of study – so by the end of year 6, your pupils will be confident in writing narratives, play scripts, biographies, autobiographies, journalistic reports, arguments, formal writing and poetry, independently.
