How can you get the most from a school visit?

Teachers are well aware of the benefits of taking children on a school trip – the opportunities for inspiring, experiential learning have a positive impact both during the visit and back in the classroom. However, with ever-present concerns about OFSTED and meeting targets, how can teachers get the most out of a school visit?

Top Trip Tips

  • Speak to the education team to let them know how the trip fits in with what is being covered in the classroom, so they can adapt the session to best suit your needs.
  • Take advantage of opportunities to visit the site before your trip. As well as being able to complete your risk assessment forms this also gives you the chance to become more familiar with the site and even identify some possible teaching points to focus on.
  • If you can’t go on many trips, consider visiting a site where you would be able to cover a range of different topics or skills all on the same day.

At Chatsworth we can help you achieve all of these tips in one go, by inviting you to attend one of our free Teachers’ Preview Evenings. With so much on offer here, from the historic house and beautiful 105 acres of garden to our hands-on farmyard and adventure playground and our engaging outdoor education sessions, chatting to our friendly and knowledgeable education team at one of these events is the best way to get the most out of your visit.

Join us at our next Preview Evening on Thursday 23rd March 2017 for a glass of wine after work and a chance to have a sneak peek at the new Gucci-sponsored House Style exhibition ahead of season opening.

For more information about the event or to book your free place, check out our website at http://www.chatsworth.org/education/what’s-on/teachers’-preview-evenings or email our education team on education@chatsworth.org.

What do your students worry about, above everything else?

What is the single most effective way of ensuring that your students are getting the most out of their assemblies, PSHE and Sex Education?

Sometimes it is difficult to know exactly what your students are thinking, experiencing and worrying about, making it just as difficult to know which topics to pay more time and attention to in assemblies, PSHE and Sex Education.

Which is precisely why ReSURV has developed youcansay surveys.

youcansay surveys, which are taken anonymously by your students, enable you to gather valuable information which will ensure that your students are getting the most out of their lessons involving health and well-being.

From the surveys you can find out, for example, how many of your students have drunk alcohol, taken drugs, experienced domestic violence, taken part in cyberbullying, or how many of your students eat breakfast every day before school.

What’s more, youcansay is flexible; surveys can be used off-the-shelf or tailored using our extensive library of topics and questions. And if there is a particular, perhaps less generic, area of concern, custom questions can be readily added to the survey.

Once the survey results are in, you will be able to see what the main issues are for your students and be able to design relevant PHSE lessons, sex education classes or assemblies to influence health and well-being in line with their needs. Please click here to find more information about youcansay surveys.

Alternatively, if you would like to talk about youcansay surveys, including their benefits and how they work, please do call us on 0118 978 1078 or contact us by email at service@youcansay.co.uk.

Debate Chamber Summer Schools

Debate Chamber is excited to announce a series of academic summer schools aimed at aspirational 15-18-year-old students of Science and Mathematics. These programmes have been designed to challenge and inspire intellectually curious students and introduce them to modern ideas in Physics, Medicine and Mathematics.

Each course will offer a fun and stimulating educational experience in which students will be encouraged to develop their conceptual understanding and applied problem-solving skills. Each day will consist of a combination of lectures, practical activities, group discussions, team challenges and problem-sets with an emphasis on the real-world applications of the theoretical ideas.

All Debate Chamber tutors have completed, or are in the process of completing, postgraduate study in their respective field and are therefore perfectly placed to engage and inspire, as well as tailor sessions to cater for the interests and ability of each individual student. Small class sizes ensure an inclusive, university-style seminar experience in which students feel comfortable asking questions to each other, as well as their tutors.

Physics Summer Schools

The Physics Summer School will introduce students to some of the major themes of 20th and 21st Century Physics. The summer school is split into two parts, with each part comprising a structured 5-day programme. Part 1 focuses on Classical Mechanics and Astrophysics with an emphasis on modern applications of Newtonian Mechanics and is relevant to both GCSE and A-Level students. Part 2 focuses on Quantum Mechanics and Relativity with an emphasis on the mathematical and conceptual foundations of these ideas, and requires that students have completed AS Mathematics (or equivalent) at the time of completing the course.

This was by far the most informative, productive and enjoyable week of my summer holiday. It was an incredibly well balanced and finely tuned course, which not only expanded my knowledge of physics, but my skills in applying it to unfamiliar problems. Chilled atmosphere, tutors approachable and engaging; couldn’t recommend this course more for aspiring physicists.’

Medicine Summer School

The Medicine Summer School offers a fun and interactive insight into the world of medicine allowing students the opportunity to develop the theoretical and applied skills required to be a doctor. Students will work in small groups alongside medical students to gain experience in identifying a patient’s primary symptoms, ordering tests, drawing conclusions and presenting their findings. The Summer School is split into five 2-day programmes, each covering a different area of medical practice – student can attend whichever Parts best suit their interests.

‘I completely recommend this course! Whether you are totally convinced Medicine is for you, or if you just want a taster to see if it’s right, this course is perfect. The tutors are passionate and highly knowledgeable, and teach a great course covering a wide range of topics. Absolutely ten out of ten on all aspects – go and do it!’

Mathematics Summer School

The Mathematics Summer School is a five-day programme that will introduce students to contemporary ideas in Pure and Applied Mathematics, with an emphasis on developing problem-solving skills. The morning sessions will be used to introduce a range of theoretical ideas including Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Calculus, Proofs, Algorithms and Infinities. The application of these ideas will be explored in the afternoon sessions through a variety of problem-sets, group activities and discussions.  Please note that students attending this course must have completed AS Mathematics.

‘Attending the Maths Summer School allowed me to explore a variety of mathematical concepts not covered at school. I was given an opportunity to learn about multivariable calculus and differential equations from a physics graduate, predicate logic and Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem from a philosophy graduate, and linear algebra from a mathematics graduate. All of my tutors were very eloquent and clear, and I’ve learnt new branches of mathematics to give myself a slight head-start going into university.’

Bursaries

Debate Chamber is committed to ensuring that financial circumstances do not prevent any student from attending our events. Students are able to apply for bursaries covering up to 100% of the course fee through our website.

How can my students attend?

All the Summer School events will be held at University of London venues in Bloomsbury, Central London, and will take place in July and August 2017. Please note that these courses are not residential, and accommodation must be arranged independently if required.

You can find full details of schedules, dates, costs, student reviews and tutors at http://www.debatechamber.com/summerschools/. There is a limited amount of bursary funding available for students who would otherwise have financial difficulty in attending – please see our website for details.

To book a place please visit www.debatechamber.com/summerschools/, call us on 0845 519 4827, or email info@debatechamber.com. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

FREE resource to connect learning to life

Help your pupils understand the exciting applications of Maths, English and Science in life after school

We’ve all heard it: “What’s the point of learning algebra? We’re never going to use it when we leave school.” When young people fail to see the purpose of education they become disengaged with their learning.

So we’re delighted to launch a new and improved version of Panjango – our world of experiential learning which gives learning context and purpose by demonstrating the many exciting applications of Maths, English and Science in the world of work. Panjango also helps young people develop the skills they need to fulfil their potential, such as teamworking, communication, creativity, and confidence – all while enabling them to learn more about future career paths.

Panjango, which is free to use, now features 120 occupations and more than 1500 contextualised challenges covering the KS2 and KS3 Maths, English and Science curriculum from Levels 3 to 7. Our new filtering system allows you to tailor your lessons and present the challenges most relevant to your class – and switch between Individual and Team modes for flexible delivery.

The resource has already received praise from some prominent people in the education world. For example, leading education author and Head Teacher of the Year, Dr Richard Gerver, said: “Panjango offers a powerful, immersive experience which helps young people understand why their learning is important and how it is used in practical settings in the world of work.”

Pupils who have been inspired to explore careers possibilities at an early stage in their education journey are typically more motivated and focused in their lessons. Panjango aims to inspire and excite young people about careers from an earlier age, helping them understand the purpose of school and become eager to engage in further careers activities as they progress through school.

To help give your learning context and purpose, register now for FREE at panjango.online.

Thank you for joining us on our journey to connect learning to life!

A Proven Way to Reach and Engage Your Students with Mental Health Issues

Every teacher has their own methods for connecting with a class, however it can be difficult when it comes to those hard-to-reach students struggling with mental health issues.

We launched EDVirtual (our virtual classroom) in 2016 so that your establishments can target these students and support them and their learning needs.

The virtual classrooms and all of their features can be accessed from any location with an internet connection, allowing you to effectively teach students who struggle to make it into the classroom at a distance.

Our unique safeguarding tools have been developed with distant learners in mind to give educators the best opportunity to deliver lessons to off-site students whilst also monitoring their behaviour and safety.

This facility will enable further support for students and the needs of those involved with these individuals in furthering their education by giving you the ability to:

  • allocate timetabled pathways that are customisable to suit students’ learning ability and needs.
  • mentor students in real-time through a written chat, verbal chat or face-to-face video link
  • monitor student’ wellbeing through our attendance trackers, safety questionnaires and alert system.
  • create bespoke learning plans and catch up programmes for your students to prevent them falling behind their classmates whilst off-site

We provide a safe and secure learning environment for hard to reach students, ensuring each student reaches their full potential in a controlled and safe environment.

For more information about EDVirtual, a two week free trial or a live online demo of the functionality of the online learning platform, contact us on 01909 568 338 or by email at mail@edlounge.com with the subject “Virtual2017”.

Better health and well-being can support learning

youcansay provides schools with insights that help in finding ways to improve aspects of pupils’ health and well-being.

  • desirable behaviours such as activity and exercise
  • avoiding negative influences like lots of unhealthy snacks
  • building emotional well-being, self awareness and regard for others

Take children who have nothing to eat before their first lesson. A bad start to a day of learning. I do not know what your school might find, but surveys suggests that between none and a third have nothing to eat before their first lesson.

Evidence from youcansay surveys.
Pupils missing breakfast are more likely to: feel poorly, feel angry, loose control, self harm, worry about not fitting in, worry about home life, spend a lot of time looking after a disabled parent, think they are too fat, and to have tried cigarettes.

Pupils NOT missing breakfast are more likely to: have a positive attitude about themselves, feel they will be successful, say they can think clearly, have someone to talk to, enjoy school work and look forward to secondary school.

Surveys are immediately available or can be tailored; we have a large questionnaire resource.

They are done online so are easy to implement and control.

Each school participating in a youcansay survey is fully supported.

It is usually repeated annually so that trends can be recognised and the outcomes of your strategies can be measured.

We use powerful methods to process and analyse the results with relevance, accuracy and speed, making them available without delay.

Results can be built into PSHE lessons, or similar, in which pupils are accustomed to dealing with sensitive issues.

You could be getting results about your school well before Easter.

youcansay surveys are affordable, costing as little as £125 for a primary school survey

To see more information on surveys which could be used in your school please click here

If you would like to talk about the questionnaires, their benefits and how they work please do call on 0118 978 1078, you can also contact us by emailing service@youcansay.co.uk

The maths curriculum favours the methodical thinker

Since the beginning, the maths curriculum has favoured the methodical thinker. So, what does this mean for our creative children?

It is apparent that maths is not as suited to our creative thinkers as it is to our methodical thinkers – particularly when we consider that there can only be one answer to a maths question, and the steps taken to get to this answer are often stringent and methodical.

Which is perhaps why some pupils find mathematical concepts incredibly difficult to grasp.

Fortunately, with the Open-ended Maths Investigations series you can now both inspire and engage your creative thinkers by introducing an optional element of creativity into their maths lessons.

The activities in the series encourage pupils to apply higher order mathematical strategies creatively and effectively – enabling pupils to develop proficiency in a wide range of problem-solving strategies.

Indeed, the investigations are designed to allow pupils to bring their own thinking and learning strategies to the task. Some pupils will work systematically and logically. Some will draw pictures to make sense of situations and yet others will plunge in using a trial and error approach, fixing up any mistakes and refining their thinking as they go along.

Furthermore, the Open-ended Maths Investigations can be used in isolation, in sequence, or dipped into as teachers require, providing a great supplement to every maths scheme of work.

The Open-ended Maths Investigations series is matched to the following strands of mathematics: number, money, measurement, space, chance and data, and patterns and algebra.

You can order the Open-ended Maths Investigations for Primary Schools Bundle for just £40. Or you can buy the books separately as printed versions (£15.99 each) or as e-book versions (£10.99 each), letting you start your pupils investigating straightaway, at the links below.

Promote Internet Safety through Game Based Learning

Computers and consoles are becoming a central part of pupils lives, and so game based learning – the integration of gaming into learning – has never been more popular in schools.

Our platform features 85 educational games, each featuring a range of puzzles and questions that have been designed based on criteria from the National Curriculum.

Our content covers a range of core and non-core subjects, including:

English – covering spelling, grammar and sentence structure.

Maths – including topics such as addition, subtraction, time tables, shapes and angles.

Science – explaining the basics of the solar system, speed, time and elements.

Internet Safety – internet security, viruses and staying safe online.

Game based learning encourages active engagement from pupils through interactive learning and instant gratification. The large selection of games allows pupils to learn at their own pace and in their own way.

We can help your establishment in promoting and supporting learning through our platform by enabling:

  • Instant tracking of pupils’ answers, understanding and progress, allowing you to easily identify their strengths and weaknesses and plan lessons accordingly.
  • Customisable multiple choice questions, giving you the ability to quiz individuals on specific topics, match our content with your lesson plans, or edit a game’s difficulty levels based on pupils’ needs.
  • Social elements to encourage interaction between pupils and creating an incentive for learning to beat the class’s high score.

Research: students who use web-based testing progress at a faster rate

Students who regularly test their literacy and numeracy skills with web-based games progress fastest overall across the subjects

According to recent research, carried out by Andrew Gallacher (an education coordinator at the University of Glasgow), students who regularly test their numeracy and literacy skills with web-based games progress fastest overall across the subjects.

Which is exactly why Education Quizzes exists – and why we are offering free sign up for schools to Education Quizzes for a whole year.

Our library of KS3 Citizenship quizzes cover an extensive range of topic areas, making them ideal for revising what your students are being taught in their Citizenship lessons, past and present.

Education Quizzes is also ideal to set as homework tasks as it involves little to no PPA time – giving you more time to focus on planning and preparing future lessons and assessing the work of your students from lessons which have gone before.

To see the KS3 Citizenship quizzes that we have produced thus far, toggle through the topic area links below. Alternatively, you can email admin@educationquizzes.com to request more information.

Physics Summer Schools

The Debate Chamber Physics Summer School is an opportunity for aspirational students to explore some of the most exciting and challenging ideas in contemporary physics. Each course consists of a structured five-day programme covering a selection of interesting and diverse topics, ranging from black holes and time travel to the search for exo-planets and life outside the solar system.

Physics Summer School – Part 1 focuses on Classical Mechanics and Astrophysics with an emphasis on modern applications of Newtonian Mechanics and is open to all students aged 15-18. Topics will include rocket propulsion, spaceship design, planetary colonisation, satellite motion, telescope design, measuring the speed of light, the principle of least time, laws of thermodynamics, entropy, the arrow of time, stellar evolution and detecting the afterglow of the big bang.

Physics Summer School – Part 2 focuses on Quantum Mechanics and Relativity with an emphasis on the mathematical and conceptual foundations of these ideas and requires that students have completed AS Mathematics (or equivalent) at the time of the course. Topics will include Schrödinger’s equation, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, Einstein’s special and general theories of relativity, time dilation, length contraction, black holes, gravitational red-shift, evidence for the big bang and the search for a Grand Unified Theory.

Classes are small, typically containing twelve to fourteen students, all of whom share a passion for physics and a curiosity to build on their existing knowledge and embrace new ideas. Classes will consist of a combination of lectures, group discussions, team exercises and problem sets, creating a comfortable environment for students to share ideas amongst their peers and to progress from their existing knowledge toward more challenging material. An expert Tutor will lead each session in a seminar format, but learning will be largely student-led wherever practical.

Please note that, although both courses complement each other, they may be treated as independent events and there is no requirement to have attended Part 1 in order to attend Part 2. Part 2 of the course will offer a strong mathematical component and an undergraduate approach to learning, helping students to make informed decisions about continuing in the study of physics, as well as bridging the educational gap between secondary school and university.

You can view a full schedule for each course, details of tutors and lots more feedback from last year on our website – www.debatechamber.com

Feedback from previous students

‘A really fantastic week, taught by some truly inspirational tutors whose passion for physics really showed in their energetic and engaging sessions. The slightly relaxed atmosphere worked incredibly well because it allowed the students and tutors to discuss in detail anything that we were curious about even if it wasn’t specifically on our timetable. This has made me really look forward to studying physics at university, and I feel the week gave me a great insight into degree level physics. I highly recommend this summer school to other physics enthusiasts!’

‘This was by far the most informative, productive and enjoyable week of my summer holiday. It was an incredibly well balanced and finely tuned course, which not only expanded my knowledge of physics, but my skills in applying it to unfamiliar problems. Chilled atmosphere, tutors approachable and engaging; couldn’t recommend this course more for aspiring physicists.’

‘The course was brilliant; usually complex and abstract topics in Physics were explained to you in the space of five days! The courses built upon the knowledge you had and decided to push you a little extra. They really inspired me to further research more complex topics in Physics in greater detail.

‘Challenging, but great fun, the Physics course was a fantastic opportunity to gain a better insight into some of the fundamental principles that govern our world, giving me a better idea of what Physics at University might be like. From learning about the rather abstract world of Quantum Mechanics to discussing black holes and even teleportation, the course left me astounded by both the amount we already know, and how much we have yet to discover! I really enjoyed the five days, working with two talented tutors and meeting some other like-minded students. Overall, an incredible week.’

Organising work experience for students with SEN

Information and activities to support your SEN students to demonstrate good work etiquette during their work experience placement

Organising work experience for SEN students can be something of a challenge, for not only must it be tailored to the needs of a young person, but it must also be tailored to the needs of a young person with a SpLD or who may view the world in a wholly different way.

So, to help your SEN students to succeed during their work experience placement (and to make organising their work experience placement easier for you) SEN Press has devised the Work Experience Value Pack.

The Work Experience Value Pack contains a wealth of information, support, and resources about what your students can expect when undertaking work experience and how to demonstrate good work etiquette in the array of situations they’re likely to find themselves in.

Not only has the value pack’s content been specifically designed to respond to the way in which students with autism typically view the world, but it will also respond to their learning needs – it has been designed for older students with a reading age of around seven.

The Work Experience Value Pack uses an approach that we have adopted through a series of six student reading books each focussed on a particular work setting, ranging from an animal charity to a fast-food restaurant, from a garage to a supermarket.

The six reading books, each of which builds upon the themes of the series (time-keeping, showing respect, and so on) are accompanied by a set of copiable worksheets and teachers’ resources, supplied in spiral-bound format for easy use.

The teachers’ resources also include around 100 A4 pages of additional resources including keyword flashcards, word searches, and spot the difference pictures.

Finally the pack also includes a CD rom which has a set of eBooks and whiteboard resources. These include real voice audio tracks of the eBook versions of the readers and a wide range of interactive activities so that the students can practise various life skills.

The complete set of resources containing two copies of each of the six readers, the complete teacher book, and the CD Rom is available for £139 plus VAT.  Individual elements from the pack are also available separately.

Important information: Support for Science Week

How to get the support science departments say they want for science week and beyond.

For over a decade, we have asked science teachers what it is they are really looking for in an activity for science week.  We have summarised the findings below – so you can see for yourself how your requirements compare and discover how you can access the best support during science week.

It may come as no surprise to find the most common response was ‘a hands-on activity that introduced something new and exciting to the curriculum for as many pupils as possible but was cost effective’.  Activities that were ‘flexible enough to fit within the overall plan for the school and able to run autonomously’ were also highly valued.  As you may expect, ‘delivery by excellent classroom practitioners’ and ‘leaving students interested enough to take science further’ were also common responses.

A significant number of schools also mentioned they made their final plans and bookings for science week after February half-term and often struggled to find spaces on a suitable activity.

As a result, we have developed and finely-honed events catering for 100-200 students a day that maintain the same high quality as our specialist G&T workshops for smaller groups.  We have also released extra booking slots throughout March at our ‘Science Week Saver’ rate – costing as little as £4 per pupil.

For this price, you can host multiple hour-long sessions in a day for up to 36 pupils at a time – allowing up to 180 pupils to participate within your normal school timings.

You can choose from a range of enrichment activities – including ELISA Testing, Micro Chemistry, Electronic Sensors and Blood Analysis – delivered as team competitions within exciting themes.

Alternatively, you can choose half-day and full-day CSI events for large groups – based on our BTEC Level 3 Forensic Science courses.  These include DNA electrophoresis and blood typing for up to 200 pupils in a day and are available from just £6 per pupil.

We supply all the equipment and our full-time teams of highly experienced teachers/presenters deliver the sessions to maximise student engagement and achievement.

We can even create a league table detailing the scores achieved by every team and turn the whole experience into a schoolwide competition.  You can then announce the winning team in the next assembly and award the medals we can include to celebrate.

Best of all, our workshops have been recommended by every host school since 2001 – so you can be certain of introducing experiences of the highest quality.

For more information, you can visit our website, call us on 01603 520866 or email us at events@thinkersineducation.co.uk.  Please quote promotional code: ‘SWS317’ to access the discounts.

Why Change to an Interactive Touchscreen (ITS)?

There comes a time with all technology when more modern equipment supersedes it. Years ago we used blackboards with chalk. Several generations later we were using Interactive whiteboards (IWB) with projectors. Believe it or not these have been in circulation in schools for around twenty years.  However time moves on and schools are now moving over to Interactive Touchscreens. These have all the benefits of IWBs plus many more:

  • Use up to 75% less power
  • Crystal clear viewing in any light conditions
  • Useable in any rooms and are not wall dependent
  • No shadows
  • No need for unsightly projector fittings

There are several brands of ITS on the market but only one is so confident of its product that it offers a SEVEN YEAR warranty. GeneeWorld  offer a guaranteed seven year warranty.

Genee is already a world renowned  brand in the education market as the leader in visualiser technology. They have used this knowledge of classroom technology and interactivity to design a board that can not only interact with legacy software, but has its own bespoke Spark software for giving you the very best results. To watch a 12 minute video of these products go to http://www.arkel.co.uk/genee.

Arkel Computer Services is a specialist Geneeworld partner and can offer you best prices for all Genee products. If you have a requirement for an ITS, visualiser or any other Genee product please call Arkel on 01858 432495 or contact sales@arkel.co.uk

Prices of Interactive Touch Screens start from: £1594

Helping children who slip behind

What factor is responsible, more than any other, for children slipping behind in literacy?

It is a fundamental fact of teaching literacy that each child progresses at his/her own unique rate.  Each child has his/her own personality.  Each has different levels of paying attention. Every child is different.

In order to resolve these various problems it is very helpful – indeed one could say essential – to have a highly accurate and rapid system of placing children according to their current literacy ability, while precisely noting the progress they are making.

Unfortunately, this creates a second problem because analysing exactly where a pupil is in terms of developing literacy skills is even more time-consuming.

The way around all this is to implement an auto-placement approach which allocates each pupil’s ability level and reveals exactly what the child needs to be focussing on.

Then, if the child can have one-to-one tuition in a way that is utterly engaging and responsive to their immediate literacy needs and within the school’s budget the issue is resolved.

All of this can all be done using Lexia’s Core5 Reading Skills software.  The analysis, the comparisons with other children, the progress, the remedial work – all of this is tracked and provided by Core5.

If you want to read the case studies involving UK schools which are already using the system please click here. You will then also find on the right of the page the route to having access to the full program for 30 days without any payment or commitment.

If you want to know more about the program, then again we have all the information you’ll need available here. Alternatively, if you would like to talk first, call 0191 482 1939, or email info@lexiauk.co.uk

Achieve Your School’s Target Attendance

Regular attendance and participation in schooling is an important factor for educational success. Students who are regular non-attenders are at risk of alienation from education that can lead to decreased options in future life.

With the statutory requirement to report attendance figures comes the additional need to look at why pupils aren’t attending. It’s important to get to the centre of why a child refuses to attend, and to put support in place through educational strategies.

‘The implementation of EDLounge to support students who are excluded from school has had a significant impact on an identified cohort of students. It provides them with a programme of study and behaviour repair work that is monitored daily by school staff and parents, ensuring that students are engaged in meaningful work throughout their exclusion.

This has meant that exclusions have become more of a deterrent and are now seen as more meaningful and robust by parents/carers. This has meant a reduction in the number of repeat exclusions which is, in turn, seeing a marked improvement in attendance…’

– EDLounge Case Study

EDLounge is an innovative online learning resource that can help your academy achieve its target attendance.

Our system is designed to motivate students who have mental health issues, are persistently absent, off-site and in alternative provision, allowing these pupils to raise their A-C attainment and gain vital qualifications.

We currently work in partnership with academies all across the UK, helping them to:

  • Claim attendance for their students
  • Reduce exclusions and persistent absences
  • Use EDVirtual’s mentor support system to engage school phobic students
  • Track and monitor pupils’ attendance and progress to produce printable reports – perfect for Ofsted inspections
  • Motivate disengaged pupils by promoting learning

EDLounge becomes your alternative provision, allowing your pupils to learn, progress and attain in an environment that is suited to their specific needs.

We work in partnership with academies to ensure comprehensive levels of safeguarding, well-being, supervision for your pupils on or off-site.

Our unique approach makes EDLounge the perfect resource for students who are in inclusion or exclusion, alongside vocational and foundation learners, target groups, and students who are vulnerable, at risk, not attending classes, persistently absent, not doing homework, disengaged or demotivated.

More about the EDLounge platform

Originally created to educate students who were in inclusion and isolation in maths, English and science, EDLounge has developed significantly since then, and now has four main aspects: EDLounge, EDClass, EDVirtual and EDSimple.

EDLounge offers students in all educational establishments a personalised learning pathway, in order to help improve their learning outcomes.

EDClass is a facility that enhances remote learning and includes live tutorial support.

EDVirtual is a virtual classroom that helps disengaged students attend lessons, gain qualifications and achieve academically.

EDSimple is an inclusive school management platform and learning environment that streamlines whole school practices.

All resources are safeguarded and supervised, and enable teachers to monitor and track students’ progress.

Lessons in financial literacy for students with SEN

Help your SEN students to make sense of money with the Making Sense of Money Set

It is pleasantly surprising when a new topic is added into the curriculum with very few teething problems, such as the introduction of financial literacy to the maths and citizenship curriculum in 2014.

However, there does seem to be a lack of resources that explore and explain finances in a way that students with SEN can easily understand.

Which is why SEN Press has devised the Making Sense of Money Set which contains a wealth of resources about dealing with money in everyday situations, including:

  • Six story books which support the ASDAN CoPE Award. Titles include, “Money In, Money Out”, “Everyday Money”, “What’s it Worth?”, “Cash and Cakes”, “Keeping Money Safe” and “Making Ends Meet”.
  • A CD-ROM providing electronic versions of the above titles, making it ideal for interactive whiteboard presentations and for students who would also benefit from listening to the text.It is also possible to edit and save the text to make your own story, create differentiated texts, and personalise the text with your students’ names to enhance engagement.
  • An extensive range of activity worksheets and interactive activities that encourage reading comprehension. Activities include, Words and Pictures, Picture Search, Keyword Flashcards, Wordsearch, Spot the Difference, How Well Did You Read?, Missing Words, Quizzes, and Drag and Drop.
  • Supporting resources for teachers including page-by-page notes for all the stories and assessment resources (feedback sheets and student record sheets).

The complete set of resources containing two copies of each of the six readers, the complete teacher book, and the CD Rom is available for £139 plus VAT (save 10%).

You can see more details and sample pages from the readers, and details for ordering individual items as well as the full pack on our “Making Sense of Money” web page.

If you have any questions or need more information, please email info@senpress.co.uk or call 01582 833205.  We’ll be delighted to hear from you.

World Book Day 2018 really is just around the corner…

Who possesses the ability to inspire even the most reluctant of readers?

It is no surprise that some schools choose to host their own World Book Day activities so that each activity can be readily adapted for the different ages and abilities of pupils – ensuring that each and every pupil gets as much out of their World Book Day as possible.

And, of course, this doesn’t just apply to World Book Day, but also to your school’s own Story/Reading/Book Week (if this is something that your school organises).

However, there is also a lot to be said for inviting professional storytellers into the school who host World Book Day workshops, for they have the extraordinary ability to inspire even the most reluctant of readers.

To achieve the best of both worlds it seems there is a need for World Book Day workshops which can be readily differentiated for the wide range of ages and abilities of pupils in the school – which is precisely what Snail Tales does.

Snail Tales is home to professional storytellers who have devised not one, but a choice of two World Book Day workshops: Storytelling on World Book Day and World Book Day for Writing. Our workshops are also suitable for schools that organise their own Story/Reading/ Book Week and we are available to make a visit to your school at any time of the year.

Unfortunately, our World Book Day workshops have sold out for World Book Day 2017 (and the subsequent weeks), so please be sure to book well in advance for World Book Day 2018. World Book Day 2018 really is just around the corner…

You can ask us to pencil you into our diary for World Book Day 2018 or for your school’s own Story/Reading/Book Week (whenever this may be) by completing our online booking form.

Alternatively, if you have an immediate question or want to find out which workshop we would recommend for your school, please do either call us on 0203 287 6245 or visit our Contact Us page.

Introducing Shakespeare at KS 2

There are many ways of introducing
Shakespeare at KS 2.

We asked Literacy Co-ordinators which
approach was best…

In a recent survey of methods of teaching Shakespeare at Key Stage 2 it was found that most respondents were highly committed to introducing Shakespeare in primary school.

But when it came to the issue of how this should be done, numerous answers were given.

Two of the most popular approaches were to use context to make sense of unfamiliar words, and/or to use a dual text edition.

Shakespeare Comic Books has produced a resource which meets many of the views expressed by those who completed our questionnaire – a highly illustrated approach with original text and a modern English translation. Combined, these make the play more rapidly accessible, particularly at Key Stage 2.

You can get a feel for the book here. Then just click on the small pictures that run down the web page to the right of the cover picture, and you’ll see exactly what individual pages of the resource look like.

Also available is the Macbeth Teachers’ Book with 50 + photocopiable worksheets  Normally this retails at £22, but for a very limited period we are offering a free copy of the teacher’s book to any school purchasing five or more comic books.

All you need to do to get the free copy is to indicate that you will be willing to complete a short questionnaire after you have used the books in two sessions with your pupils or students.

The questionnaire will only take five minutes to complete at most and can simply be emailed back to us once completed.  This offer is only available for a limited number of schools, and we do reserve the right to stop the offer the moment we have sufficient schools participating.

“If you would like to take part in this offer and complete the questionnaire simply indicate on your order – PLUS FREE TEACHERS BOOK FOR COMPLETING QUESTIONNAIRE”

There are more details of how to order on the website.  And If you would like to know more please do email us at info@shakespearecomics.com or call 01691 770165.

Supporting your SEN students to form healthy relationships

How can you support your Special Educational Needs students to form healthy relationships in all aspects of their life?

The ability to form a healthy relationship is something that we typically learn from trial and error and observation, but it may be that your SEN students require a bit more support if they are able to form and maintain healthy relationships throughout adolescence and adulthood.

Which is why we have devised The Relationships series. A comprehensive resource offering guidance to teenagers aged 14 to 19 with a reading age of around seven by being sympathetic to the way that autistic teenagers (for example) typically view the world.

The Relationships series consists of:

  • Six story books, which support the ASDAN Transition Challenge and Towards Independence Life Skills courses, exploring a different situation where it is important that young people identify their emotions, as well as the emotions of others.

Titles include, “The Date: Rachel’s Story” and “The Date: Mike’s Story” (differing opinions and sides to the same story), “Mum’s New Boyfriend” (accepting a parent’s new partner), “My Teacher” (understanding teacher/pupil relationships), “Sisters at War” (managing sibling tension) and “Staying Out Late” (the issues it raises with parents).

  • A CD-ROM providing electronic versions of the above titles, making it ideal for interactive whiteboard presentations and for students who would also benefit from listening to the text. It is also possible to edit and save the text to make your own story, create differentiated texts and personalise the text with your students’ names to enhance engagement.
  • An extensive range of activity worksheets and interactive activities that encourage reading comprehension. Activities include, Missing Words, Quizzes, Drag and Drop, Words and Pictures, Picture Search, Keyword Flashcards, Wordsearch, Spot the Difference and How Well Did You Read?.
  • Supporting resources for teachers including page-by-page notes for all the stories and assessment resources (feedback sheets and student record sheets).

The complete set of resources containing two copies of each of the six readers, the complete teacher book, and the CD Rom is available as the Relationships Value Pack for £139 plus VAT (save 10%).

Individual elements from the pack are also available separately.

Target hard-to-reach students with a proven virtual classroom

A proven way to reach and engage your students with mental issues

FREE online platform to connect learning to life

Help your pupils make the connection between what they learn in the classroom and the future world of work

Too many children fail to see the purpose of education and become disengaged with their learning. But pupils who have been inspired to explore careers possibilities are typically more motivated and focused in their lessons. Panjango aims to inspire and excite children about the world of work from an earlier age, starting in primary schools, by showing them the real world applications of their learning in life after school.

Panjango is a world of experiential learning which gamifies learning, links the curriculum to the real world and equips young people with the knowledge, skills and experience they need to find their purpose and fulfil their potential. For children of primary age, making a connection between what they learn in the classroom and how it relates to the world of work isn’t easy. But Panjango offers a free, easy-to-use platform to help any teacher bring the curriculum to life through a wide range of interactive, contextualised challenges.

Panjango features 120 occupations and more than 1000 challenges covering the Maths, English and Science curriculum from levels 3 to 7. A filtering system allows teachers to tailor lessons and present the challenges most relevant to their class – filtering by level, subject and even individual topics. For example, teachers could choose to display ratio or geometry challenges in Maths, grammar or transcription challenges in English, or evolution or forces challenges in Science.

Panjango has already received praise from some prominent people in the education world. For example, leading education author and Primary Head Teacher of the Year, Richard Gerver, said:

“Panjango is a dynamic and original resource to inspire children and educators, ensuring that our kids don’t just survive but thrive in their future. Panjango offers a radical new approach to the delivery of careers education – a powerful, immersive experience which helps young people understand why their learning is important and how it is used in practical settings in the world of work. The resource has the potential to significantly enhance the learning outcomes of young people by bringing learning to life, making if fun, interactive and meaningful.”

Spelling Practice Activity Books and Weekly Spelling Lists

Revised for the 2016 SATs requirements:

Spelling Practice Activity Books and Weekly Spelling Lists

for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, & Year 6

The simplest and most effective way to create a unified tracking approach to your pupils’ progress in spelling is by first implementing a KS2 spelling policy.

In doing this, everyone knows what has gone before and what comes next, enabling pupils to progress in their spelling more rapidly and schools to respond to the demands of the English Programmes of Study more efficiently.

Which is why we have revised our popular KS2 Spelling Series to meet the 2016 SATs requirements…

The KS2 Spelling Series consists of Key Stage 2 Weekly Spelling Lists and Spelling Practice Activity Books for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6.

Furthermore, the KS2 Spelling Series now includes diagnostic assessments which will give an indication as to where a pupil should begin, four words following a specific rule to be introduced every week, and two words from the relevant Y3/4 or Y5/6 word lists to learn each week.

It will introduce concepts of spelling which will be tested in the Punctuation & Grammar part of the Year 6 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test (paper 1), including: suffixes, prefixes, the use of the hyphen and the possessive apostrophe with plural words, contractions and other carefully organised words for revision.

The KS2 Spelling Series can be downloaded for just £50+Vat (£10+VAT per PDF workbook) by visiting https://www.topical-resources.co.uk/category/spelling-programmes/.

Cheap and affordable locker systems

Lockers have traditionally been built like biscuit tins. Such lockers quickly become unsightly and, even worse, are an easy target for more mischievous pupils.

If pupils are offered a location in which to store their belongings, that location must be both secure and attractive.

image The answer, as many schools have found, is simple. Make a completely new, modern and thoroughly secure set of lockers available to parents and their children for a modest rental charge.   This provides safe storage for everyone, and the rental income from the parents pays for the lockers.

Furthermore, by fitting combination locks money is saved on replacement keys.  These combination locks can be opened by a master key, allowing them to be reset.

Once paid for the lockers provide a valuable source of income.

All lockers come with a ten year guarantee. A maintenance contract can also be built into the purchase plan.

To take a look at what our lockers look like please click here.

Purchasing lockers can be done in two ways by a leasing scheme or outright purchase.  For prices for typical locker installations please request a quote by clicking here.

Schools spent over £200m on supply cover due to staff absences

What is the single most effective way to make your school’s cashflow forecasting easier with regard to expenditure on supply cover?

According to the LA and school expenditure report, last financial year schools spent over £200m on supply cover due to staff absences. However, we must also consider that supply cover isn’t just dear, but is also incredibly difficult to forecast, not least because staff absences are often short-notice and unexpected.

It is with this in mind that SchoolsUK offers a 5 in 1 Staff Absence Insurance Cover – which not only enables you to claim back the huge costs of supply cover, but which also offers the additional benefit of making cashflow forecasting much easier as you pay a recurring fee each month. Giving you complete budget certainty!

What’s more, Staff Absence isn’t all that is covered under this policy. Our 5 in 1 Staff Absence Insurance Cover also includes cover for Staff Wellbeing, Occupational Health, Maternity and HR & Management. Thus it is likely that with our insurance you will be able to release funds into your budget for services that you are already paying for.

Help supporting your boys?

Boys don’t cry?
Supporting the emotional and mental health of boys and young men

Are you concerned about the mental and emotional health issues surrounding boys? This workshop might be what you are looking for – an experiential, hands-on approach to providing practical solutions for improving boys mental health. Mengage have run this course countrywide and keep building on the practical solutions after each session. Why not have them come share their experience with your school.

WORKSHOP. Boys don’t cry? –  Supporting the emotional and mental health of boys and young men

“Teachers should be given training in working more effectively with boys to support healthier mental and emotional development and the skills to manage health services.”

(The mental health and wellbeing of men and boys: Proceedings of the expert symposium held at Leeds Beckett University on November 6th 2014)

A 2014 conference held at Leeds Beckett University – a university hosting the Centre for Men’s Health, explored male mental health and wellbeing with an aim of informing participants about developments in mental health work with boys and men, and implications and suggestions for future policy and practice.  The expert symposium recognised a key mental health role for education and the delivery of PSHE work with boys:

Personal, Social and Health Education should be gender informed/gender sensitive, with greater access to externally supported services; ‘Schools are the ultimate upstream setting which will pay off later downstream’.

Whilst the transition into policy of gendered work is long overdue, recognition of the value of gender sensitive PHSE and that teachers should receive training to support their work with boys and young men is welcome.

Workshop. Boys don’t cry?

Given a limited number of organisations offering schools-based training on gender sensitive work with males, Mengage are pleased to offer a workshop, ‘Boys don’t cry? Supporting the emotional and mental health of boys and young men’. The workshop is aimed at teachers, teaching assistants and affiliated staff and considers:

  • Act like a boy: what research has to say about the emotional and mental health of boys and young men
  • Issues and concerns: bullying, sexuality, peer pressure, relationships, pornography, body-image, exclusion, pressure to succeed/exams…
  • Being practical: what can schools do to support and enhance the emotional and mental health of boys and young men? Action planning and implementation.

This three-hour informal workshop is based on research and proven practical work with boys and young men, providing staff with knowledge about a concern that not only affects school performance but can have an impact across the lifespan – and significantly, an opportunity for staff to consider practical solutions schools can implement to address this concern.

This workshop is delivered in three hours and costs £895. Whole staff can be accommodated, right down to 10 or 15 committed staff.

Contact liam@mengage.co.uk or 07788725318 to discuss a booking. Alternatively, go to our website www.mengage.co.uk to see what else we offer around raising boys’ achievement and accredited mentoring.

Introducing Shakespeare at KS3

Schools use many different ways of introducing Shakespeare at KS3.  But which works best?

A survey of English teachers (including both heads of department, and classroom teachers) has revealed a significant diversity of opinion as to what is the best way to introduce Shakespeare to pupils and students for the first time.

Further, when we asked if it was felt that introducing a Shakespeare play for the first time was problematic, the most common answer was that it was difficult because of resistance to the whole concept of Shakespeare.  In short, barriers had to be broken down.

Now, in response to a range of questions asked of teachers in the last couple of years we’ve produced a Shakespeare resource which meets many of the needs expressed by both classroom teachers and heads of departments.

For example, we noted that many teachers like to have a dual text edition with the original and a modern translation available at the same time. Others welcome a highly illustrated comic book approach to make the play more rapidly accessible, particularly at Key Stage 3.

Likewise we noted that around two thirds of teachers involved in teaching Shakespeare to students seeing it for the first time said they liked to start with key scenes only.

So this is what we have produced: a resource that incorporates all these requirements. You can get a feel for the results on our website

Then just click on the small pictures that run down the web page to the right of the cover picture, and you’ll see exactly what individual pages of the resource look like.

There are price details and details of how to order also on the website  And If you would like to know more please do email us at info@shakespearecomics.com or call 01691 770165.

How to… boost creative writing among your pupils

Successful creative writers have confidence in their creative writing abilities – so how can you boost your pupils’ creative writing confidence?

Children don’t typically need any encouragement when it comes to creative thinking. In fact, sometimes their creative thinking can be a little too…. creative. Yet the boundaries of structured writing can sometimes hinder their usual creative thinking and thus, their creative writing skills.

Clearly, writing structure cannot simply be ignored so it is important to teach children how there can be harmony between creative thinking and writing structure – thus increasing their creative writing confidence.

With this in mind, Brilliant Publications has produced the Boost Creative Writing Series – a series of books which provide additional reinforcement of key skills.

The structured planning sheets in the Boost Creative Writing books provide pupils with non-prescriptive writing scaffolds and cover a range of writing genres, from stories and poems to book reviews and newspaper reports.

Furthermore, the Boost Creative Writing Years 5-6 (ages 9-11) includes a handy Tips for Writing booklet that can be copied and bound to make a useful reference booklet for pupils, or sheets can be given individually as and when required.

Achieve Your School’s Target Attendance

Regular attendance and participation in schooling is an important factor in educational success. Students who are regular non-attenders are at risk of alienation from education that can lead to decreased options for future learning.
