What can you say when the pupil or student turns up with a new, but unplayable, instrument?

It is one of the most embarrassing moments – when a pupil or student who is enthusiastic to learn to play a musical instrument comes to the first lesson with something that is, quite simply, unplayable.

How does one tell the parent – and indeed the child – that lessons can’t meaningfully start now, because the instrument is not up to standard?

There is only one complete way around this problem and that is to tell the parents exactly what they need to buy, and what they need to avoid, before the process starts.

Of course, you may well already have this in hand, and if so I won’t take up more of your time.  But if you feel that some parents with pupils or students in your school may be tempted to go out and buy an instrument that is completely inappropriate for their son or daughter, then we’ve an idea that may help you.

Please click here to find some advice which you may want to send out to parents and/or put on your school website – a letter which warns parents about the hazards of buying a particular type of musical instrument.

If you wish to hand it out to parents, or email them when they sign up to start lessons, please do so.  You can, of course, put it on headed pager if you wish.

The letter does include a mention of ourselves, as a source of instruments, which I hope you will find acceptable within the context.

If you have any questions or queries about the services and instruments we offer, we are of course very happy to oblige.

Safety over cost, a practical example of the problems faced by mathematicians, engineers and businesses.

So that students can see how important maths is to our businesses and to our building industry we have put together a practical problem solving exercise called The Oil Rig Platform.  It is designed to simulate the workings of a team of engineers, trying to find a solution to a problem by building an oil rig platform.

The students are divided into small teams and challenged to build a model of an oil rig platform and work out how much it costs to build using only set materials.  To test for safety the platform must be able to support the weight of a brick!  Will your students design it so cheaply that it collapses or will they spend more money to make it strong and sturdy?

The exercise is suitable for both KS3 and KS4 students and runs over one lesson.  Each team is given the student brief, a set of resources and a deadline.  The winning team is the one who can build the oil rig, support the weight of a brick and is the cheapest to build.  A great learning experience and good fun for everyone.

What’s more – we have made it really easy for the teacher to deliver too!

This resource contains: clear teachers’ guidance notes that explain how to run the exercise, the students exercise brief, resources checklist and the assessment criteria.

How much does this all cost?  Only £20.00 and can be re-used over and over again!

There are more details at…

http://c-l-e.co.uk/buy-teaching-resources-online/oil-rig-platform/

You can pay and download the exercise direct from our website using PayPal or you may wish to pay with either a cheque or a purchase order number. Simply e-mail your purchase order number to us and we will send the exercise to you along with the invoice for payment within 14 days.

A great way to start or round off The Romans topic.

!cid_aefaeaee79801479f5421ec68bd393edPupils can speed through the planning stage and write better Roman stories (in pairs) using my Roman writing frame

I am a children’s author who offers assemblies and creative writing workshops for all ages and abilities. Holding a writing day is a great way to start or round off The Romans topic.

Please email workshop@spartapuss.co.uk for prices and availability.

Thanks

Robin Price

What happens in your Roman assemblies?
Pupils take part in lots of fun and interactive things including: Gladiator fighting to the death; Choose an Emperor and salute them in Latin; Roman Master Chef etc.

How does the writing element work?
I follow the assembly up with ‘flash writing’ workshops where children write their own stories in pairs. This is sure to generate some epic Roman tales!

Who is this for?
Gladiators are a bit too scary for Reception, (I do a special assembly for younger children)  Everyone from Y1 up is welcome to attend my assembly. I tailor the content of each workshop to suit Y1-Y6.

Who are you?
I have written 14 books suitable for ages from Reception to Y6, including The Olympuss Games series (which is set in ancient Rome and Greece in a world ruled by cats.) Parents in Touch said: ‘Please, do introduce them to your child; they are such fun and they will encourage an interest in ancient history.’

What is the biggest problem your SENCo faces, and what can be done about it?

!cid_acfac88ed59c13b6a0fc4563096a0f7eOf course I can’t possibly know the answer to that question as it relates to your school – but I can offer one possible answer which many special needs teachers have given me when I have spoken with them.

And indeed it is an answer that I believe many special needs co-ordinators would agree with.

It is the issue of managing parental expectations in terms of what the school can offer and what the special needs department of your school can do.

Because so many special needs co-ordinators have said that this is a particular issue for them, my colleagues and I who have been working on Special Needs Week have made “Managing Parental Expectations” one of the key themes on the Special Needs Week website.

The aim of Special Needs Week which runs from 13 to 17 June is to help teachers across the school understand the vast range of work that their colleagues in the Special Needs department are facing on a daily basis.

The site contains details of over sixty different special needs that schools are now facing, along with information about products and materials that can be used to support SENCos in their work.

There is also a review of what the law says in relation to special needs for each of the four constituent parts of the UK, as well as a look at the growing issue of mental health problems among young people.

But my own view remains that it is the management of parental expectations that is a core issue for SENCos – which is why our website has a particular focus on this issue.

The article on parental expectations is here, and I do hope that both you and your special needs colleagues find it and the rest of the Special Needs Week website to be of interest. You can reach the home page of the site here.

If you have any thoughts or questions about our work in trying to support Special Needs teachers and raising the profile of special needs among all teachers, I would be very interested in hearing from you.  Please do drop me a line.

Calling all school fundraisers!

I know Christmas seems a long way away, but registration for our 2016 School Christmas Card Project is now open!

Raise money for your school with schoolchristmascardproject.org.uk

Our School Christmas Card Project allows your pupils to create fantastic, professionally printed Christmas Cards with children’s artwork and raise loads of money for the school. And with absolutely no upfront costs whatsoever, it’s a fantastic, easy and very popular way for schools to raise money for the PTA or other charity.

You can order our free info pack from our website – click here.

Children create their own artwork which is printed on professionally produced cards and other products, which the school sells at a profit to the parents. It is a rewarding and fun project for the children and the whole school to be involved in – and an average school of 250 pupils can easily raise £500 or more! The children will love getting directly involved with school fundraising and parents will love seeing their children’s artwork on professionally printed cards!

We offer packs of Christmas cards, gift labels, thank you postcards and wrapping paper so there’s plenty to choose from!

How much does it cost?

Absolutely nothing! The project is completely free to the school – you just keep the profit! Parents place their orders and pay the school before we ask for any payment at all. We offer very competitive prices and our products are very high quality which means you can maximise the earning potential for your school with accessible and great value cards, labels, thank you cards and wrapping paper. You can view our price table on our website.

If you feel your school would benefit from raising money with the School Christmas Card Project – please visit our website for more information. Alternatively, please forward this email to your school’s art teacher or suitable coordinator for the project.

Thank you for your attention – we know we still have the summer to look forward to, so let’s not wish away the months just yet…if you order your free info pack now, we’ll keep the reindeer in hibernation for a little longer 🙂

Kind regards
Steve
