OWL, the Electricity Saving Company , to Help Leeds University Reduce its £11m Energy Bill
OWL, the electricity saving company, is partnering with Leeds University to launch a year-long study on how it might reduce its £11m a year energy bill. The study will see Leeds University use the latest OWL Wireless Electricity Monitor, to help reduce electricity use and its impact i on the environment.
An OWL, which is easy to install, simply attaches to the mains electricity supply, monitors electricity and shows usage clearly on the wireless LCD display in pounds and pence, how much electricity is being used at any given time. According to Ofgem (the gas and electricity regulator) a monitor can save up to £125 a year on an average household electricity bill of £513.
The pilot scheme starting this week at Leeds University, during Energy Saving Week (19th – 25th October) aims to save 10% off its £11m energy bill.
The partnership will see two student apartment blocks taking part, one using an OWL and one without. An OWL helps to reduce electricity use by changing behavioural habits, so the immediate impact of a student turning off a light or turning down the thermostat will be seen on the screen in pounds and pence. The OWL then monitors the information which is recorded instantly and cumulatively, helping to manage all electricity output in the building. Not only does the device save money by helping reduce electricity use but it also reduces the impact on the environment by reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
The project, which is being monitored by a Leeds student who recently won a Sustainable Development placement supported by OWL, will provide information on reducing carbon emissions for student residencies. If successful it will be rolled out across Leeds University as a whole and will provide a blueprint for the universities and institutions across the UK and internationally on how to reduce their Carbon Footprint.
The OWL Wireless Electricity Monitor is just one product in the OWL range. To meet all energy (electricity) saving needs OWL has created the Owl USB Connect, a clever monitor that allows you to download the electricity information from the OWL Wireless Electricity Monitor via the USB port into your PC.
The OWL Multiple Power Saver Strips, complete with Remote Control, ensure all household appliances left on standby can be easily turned off remotely at one source. To operate OWL products, in addition to other household appliances, the OWL Rechargeable Batteries have been created to recharge up to 500 times, saving hundreds of pounds in disposable batteries. Following on from the success of the Wireless Electricity Monitor, OWL have also created the OWL Micro Wireless Electricity Monitor, which is simple, easy to install and a sleek version of the original.
The Leeds University project is part of OWL’s overall objectives to reduce energy use in schools and institutions, aiming to both help institutions save money as well as helping to reduce their Carbon Footprint.
