What does a Modern Languages lesson look like?
What does a Modern Languages lesson look like?
This must look like one of the silliest questions ever – as Head of Modern Languages you know perfectly well what an ML lesson looks like, not least given the fact that you have taught a fair number.
But there are a couple of really good reasons for contemplating this issue.
Firstly, not all of your colleagues in your school will be as experienced as you, and so watching another teacher’s unexpurgated lesson is not a bad idea.
Secondly, you may have one or two colleagues who have become stuck in their approach of teaching in a particular way, because that’s how they always teach. A new approach might do them the world of good.
The answer to situations like these is to allow your colleagues to watch a lesson taught in another school. Not a staged piece of work, not one where the director has cut bits and pieces to remove all the difficult bits, but rather a regular modern languages lesson in a regular school.
Watching such a lesson does not give all the answers (although it may give some). Rather it raises questions. Why did the teacher do x? Why not do y? Was that the best thing to say? And so on.
Only by questioning in this way can most of us seek to improve our methods of teaching.
