Giving students a higher perception of Science
Giving students a higher perception of Science
If you ask your students what jobs or careers focus on Science, you can get an immediate understanding of just how highly they regard the subject.
It is an important topic, because if they answer “Frankenstein” then the chances are they hold Science in low esteem. This in turn implies that the effort that they will put into each activity in the Science lesson will be extremely limited.
If, however, they answer “Forensic Scientist”, “Microbiologist”, or “Veterinary Surgeon”, then you know that they are holding Science in high esteem.
The question therefore is, how does one move the student from perceiving Science as of low value to seeing it as a gateway to an exciting life beyond school?
One way is to let the students work through the “Top Careers in Science” cards which gives details of a large range of Science orientated careers.
In addition to giving details of the careers, the cards give a mark out of ten for the importance of various skills, such as communication, ability and willingness to travel, numeracy, computer skills, and technical skills.
If you wish to extend the use of the cards the students can mark themselves out of ten on each of these scores and then look for the cards that match their own evaluation.
Obviously there is a careers department in the school that helps students consider which subject they might study at university, and ultimately which career they might take on.
But as a preparation for this, and as a way of enhancing the student perception of Science, the Top Careers in Science cards can be invaluable.
