Listening books for use in schools: an update

Last September I reported on Listening Books, a UK audiobook charity that helps those who struggle, or who are unable to read in the usual way, including for example, those with special educational needs such as dyslexia.

Stephen Fry, their patron, recently generated a wave of interest after using his Twitter page to announce their new website.

www.listening-books.org.uk.

What I particularly like is the fact that users can choose a title from their online catalogue of over 750 audiobooks, press play and when they have finished listening, they can bookmark the exact point to return to when they next log in.

For a non-fee paying primary or secondary school, Listening Books offers a streaming membership for £20 per year which gives the school:

  • Access to over 750 titles, including those which support the National Curriculum from Key Stage 2 to A-Level.

  • Educational titles which are not available elsewhere in audiobook format, including set texts and study guides in a variety of subjects.

  • 10 licences to use on 10 different PCs as ‘hotspots’ 24 hours a day.

  • Access to the bookmarking service.

Listening Books also offers a library of almost 2000 MP3 CDs via their postal service and their catalogue is constantly growing.

All of their audiobooks are either commercially sourced wherever possible or recorded in Listening Books’ digital studios by professional audiobook producers.

They are currently offering a limited free trial for non-fee paying schools, or you can join up straight away and be guaranteed to start your school’s membership within days.

As a charity, Listening Books subscription rates for non-fee paying schools are subsidised by charitable trusts. Schools which charge a fee are eligible to join, however subscription rates will reflect the true cost of membership.
